  • A 10-minute drive to Three Counties Showground and Upton-upon-Severn
  • Adults-only unit with access to self-catering facilities and bathroom
All about time in the outdoors? Hikes, bike rides and a generous portion of spectacular views? Then settle into the shepherd’s hut in the grounds of Micklefield Cottage, a fab spot in a south Worcestershire paddock, in sight of the Malvern Hills. This hut is in the hamlet of Welland Stone, so you’ll be well positioned to hit a variety of walking and cycling paths in the local area. At the same time, a laidback day of coffees, tasty bites or beers can be tracked down in Upton-on-Severn’s shops, cafés and pubs, 10 minutes’ drive from the site. The town hosts a variety of events – just check out what’s on ahead of time as jazz, blues and folk festivals are all on the schedule here. The Three Counties Showground is a 10-minute drive away and organises events like the Royal Three Counties Show and the RHS Malvern Spring Garden Show. Back on base, the electric-heated hut has access to a private toilet and shower – so there’ll be no sharing with other guests – and outside is a firepit/barbecue with a picnic table for alfresco meals. Separate self-catering facilities are on hand for making food. And inside? Well, there’s electric lighting, power points and a USB charging point, plus twin beds that can be converted into a double if needed – all you need for a cosy little time.

Mary's shepherd's hut

Liked: We stayed for 4 nights in Jun 2023. We absolutely loved our stay. Very comfortable hut, with lovely views. We found the chow shed super useful - we prepared all our meals in there. The chow shed was fully equipped - I cannot think of anything that we needed that was not provided. Every evening we'd sit by the firepit and have a BBQ, and then enjoy the heat and the peace and quiet with a glass of wine. A very quiet and peaceful place to sit and watch the sunset. We were thrilled to see the horses when we arrived. The hut is perfectly placed close to the town of Upton. And we drove to the nearby Malvern Hills, the Combertons, Pershore, and the local farm shops. Hosts Naomi and Mark were lovely - very helpful and made us feel very welcome. While visiting, we heard about the festivals in Upton, and are already planning our next visit - we would definitely stay at Micklefield Cottage again!

Mary's shepherd's hut

Liked: We had a lovely few days staying in Mary's Hut. Situated close to the Malvern Hills, it was an excellent place from which to explore. Lots of great walking and exploring. We particularly liked walking to the Michelin starred pub 15 mins away. Our hosts had thought of everything to make our stay special. We would definitely visit again.

Mary's shepherd's hut

Liked: We spent a lovely bank holiday weekend in the shepherds' hut at Micklefield cottage. The setting is stunning, with a beautiful view over the paddock and onto the Malvern hills, the perfect retreat. The shepherd' s hut (Mary) is charming and very comfortable, you've so much outside space to enjoy, either sitting out on the decking or around the open fire. The 'chow shed' has everything you need, it's a cosy spot itself. Everything has been thought of for an enjoyable and stress-free stay. What really made it for us was how warm and friendly the owners Naomi and Mark are, full of information on walks and local areas to visit, they make you feel very much at home while allowing you to enjoy their perfect little spot in peace and tranquillity. Away from the cottage the nearby town of Upton on Severn is fun and very pretty with plenty to do and enjoy. Beyond is Ledbury and Tewkesbury which are both worth a visit. Micklefield cottage is certainly a place we'd love to return.

Mary's shepherd's hut

Liked: We chose this site as it is in an excellent location for the Malvern hills and surrounding area. The hosts were very welcoming and the facilities provided were everything you needed for a relaxing stay. There were tea bags and coffee provided with milk and bottled water in the fridge on arrival. Mary's shepherd's hut

Liked: We stayed here for two nights to explore the area. We wanted something quiet and peaceful with good facilities and this place have provided that and more. The kitchen was available for our own private use, which we enjoyed using for making breakfast and supper, with a very rustic look. The separate toilet and shower room were clean and thought out. The hut was very cute and warm with plenty of space for two people. There were even USB charging points on the wall socket. The hosts Naomi and Mark were friendly and fantastic. They even provided us with a printout of the nearby river when we mentioned the possibility of doing some kayaking.

Local attractions

If you’re yet to check out the Malvern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you’ll soon find out that the hilly landscapes are pretty spectacular – Sugarloaf Hill (20 minutes' drive) and Perseverance Hill (15 minutes) in particular. That’s what makes this area such ripe hiking and walking grounds – but with a variety of historic sights around, history buffs should also find themselves properly entertained. First of all, check out Great Malvern Priory (15 minutes) and Tewkesbury Abbey (20 minutes), two fine examples of a Benedictine monastery. Then pay a visit to the gorgeous Worcester Cathedral (half an hour) overlooking the river Severn for more cool architecture and bites of history. With the National Trust’s Croome (20 minutes) close by, you’ll also be set to explore an 18th-century country house, including the walled garden, exhibitions, collections and a World War II airbase exhibition. For another peaceful afternoon, of shopping perhaps, Ledbury (20 minutes) has some splendid independent shops (and a poetry festival if you time your visit right).
