  • Hardstanding pitches overlooking the lakes at a West Midlands fishery
  • National Exhibition Centre 10 minutes by train from Berkswell station
  • Five fishing lakes and a tackle shop; on-site café open daily
Got something on at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre? Stopping over at Lavender Hall Fishery in the West Midlands couldn’t be more convenient – it makes sense to base yourself here as the NEC is just 15 minutes’ drive or 10 minutes by train from Berkswell railway station, conveniently right next door to the campsite. You’re pretty much guaranteed peace and quiet on the hardstanding pitches; this is an adults-only site surrounded by mature trees for extra privacy. Well-behaved dogs are welcome, but please keep them under tight control as the pitches are set within a popular fishery with five coarse fishing lakes – which you can view from the pitches. The Lavender Café is open between 8.30am and 1pm daily, with the full English breakfast being a much-loved speciality along with a menu of paninis and baked potatoes, tea, freshly ground coffee and soft drinks. There’s a covered terrace overlooking the fishing lakes so you can keep your eyes on the action as you eat. There are four pubs within 10 minutes’ stroll of the site, and most things you need can be found in the village of Balsall Common (five minutes’ drive), from takeaways to chemists and grocery essentials.

Non-electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: We knew we'd arrive late so called in advance and were quickly given the appropriate number for the staff who'd be on site that evening. We travelled in our micro camper and found that the lane into the site was fine to use despite heavy rain and arriving in the dark. There were potholes, but consider the use of the site and the weather. Damage over time is inevitable and the lane was not water-logged or impassable in any sense. There was no risk at all that we would not reach the site or that we'd damage our vehicle. Maybe I'm just used to it as a Yorkshire lass, but our neighbours in much larger vehicles seemed happy enough, too. The staff could not have been more helpful before and after we arrived. Debbie arranged for us to park in a nearby well-lit pitch as it was late. The pitch was large and the site is peaceful - we are tiny but the pitches easily accommodate RVs. We could not pitch our awning as the non-hardstanding part to the side was brambles rather than grass and may have torn the groundsheet. We didn't need the awning so we didn't ask to move, but I have no doubt that staff would have provided us support the next morning had it been necessary. Swiftly prepared, tasty and affordable food available at the clean, warm cafe. There are toilets in the cafe which are accessible during 'office hours'. Well-stocked tackle shop with good signage to indicate where to get your fishing papers. As you'll see in the details, there are no shower/toilet blocks, but it's easy to wash etc and dispose of waste water not far from the camper standing. Debbie went to the trouble to get her wellies and high beam headtorch on to help us navigate the dark when we arrived and show us clearly before we settled for the night. We'd definitely return, in fact we plan to later this year.

Disliked: Nearby construction of HS2. This didn't interfere with our enjoyment of the site, but lights can be seen on the cranes being used and works may be off-putting to others.

Non-electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Sehr freundliche Platzbetreiber.

Non-electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Couldn’t drive to the site due to excessively poor road with mud and potholes. Turned around half way. The approach is a combination of a scrapyard and bomb site.

Local attractions

Keen anglers will no doubt want to put in some time at the fishing lakes; three are dedicated to match or pleasure fishing and two to carp fishing – the latter two must be booked in advance. But this place isn’t all about angling, as visitor attractions nearby include spectacular Warwick Castle (25 minutes’ drive), where you can easily spend a day exploring the dungeons or watching raptor flying displays and jousting competitions. Continuing the historical theme, tour the Insta-worthy Elizabethan knot garden among the remains of Kenilworth Castle and Elizabethan Garden (15 minutes), or have a potter around the richly furnished interiors at National Trust - Baddesley Clinton (20 minutes), a moated masterpiece of ornate Tudor architecture. The famed Elizabethan bard William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon (35 minutes) in 1564; visit to see his half-timbered childhood home or book in advance to see one of his plays at the renowned Royal Shakespeare Company. If you hit a rainy day, have a splash around on the waterslides at The Wave Waterpark (20 minutes), or go shopping and catch a blockbuster movie at Touchwood Solihull mall (15 minutes).
