Pitches tucked among the trees

  • Small, friendly Staffordshire campsite in the rural village of Hixon
  • Shugborough Hall 15 minutes’ drive and Alton Towers half an hour
  • Dog-friendly pitches with electric hook-ups; pub five minutes’ walk
Heading Staffordshire way? If you’re after somewhere small and friendly to lay your head, make a beeline for Oak Deer Country Park in the rural village of Hixon. This peaceful and well-tended site has far-reaching rural views and on clear, cloudless days you’ll be rewarded with spectacularly colourful sunsets. The pitches have facilities including drinking-water standpipes and pay-as-you-go electric hook-ups, plus a unisex toilet. Several lights come on around the site so you can walk safely after dark – however, these go off at midnight. Right next to the campsite is a field dedicated to exercising your four-legged companions; for longer walkies you can follow a public footpath along the Trent and Mersey Canal (20 minutes’ stroll) and across the surrounding farmland. Just please keep your dogs on a lead and under control around the site, and pick up any droppings. There are also lots of handy amenities close at hand; you can walk to a convenience store, a couple of takeaways and a pub in less than five minutes.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Friendly and helpful staff on site, asked what facilities we would like upon arrival and guided us to the pitch. Lovely views over the countryside. Nice and quiet and had a good night sleep. Coop just outside the site and a nice pub just 2 minutes walk away.

Disliked Electric hookup is on a meter with a minimum £5 top up, we only stayed for one night so didn't use most of the credit applied.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked This was a Certified Location (which I booked through Pitch Up online and paid a £3.75 deposit) recommended to me for a one night stay on my halfway point to the Lake District. James Harvey gave me a warm welcome and said if I needed help, to call at his caravan. Chris walked me driving my campervan over to my pitch and connected my hook up cable. The site itself was lovely and not crowded. There was an area to walk my dog.

Disliked Janme's Harvey did not have a card reader for me to pay him the balance of £21.25, as he only took cash. Like so many now, I don't carry cash. I use my phone to pay for everything. He said the co-op had a cash machine, but that only took a bank card. James Harvey gave me his bank details so I could transfer the money to his bank.

Liked Very peaceful setting, near shop and local pub, but no walks unless you walk along the country roads. But very pleasant outlook and very helpful and Friendly on site. Dog friendly site too, bonus.

Disliked If you like walking the main town is 2.5 miles away and had to walk along Rd till we got to canal but worth it.

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked !!!! Lovely hosts, absolutely top drawer
The pictures that represent the site are fantastic... beyond fantastic, but very clever... maybe not reality.
Pub... loved the dog friendly pub, which is all of 5 mins walk, but we didn't eat

Disliked Being camped in a car park, OK, what you need to know is obviously its the poorer weather and there are no grass pitches which means you are in a car park. It's a nice car park compared to some I have stayed in, but we won't be back until grass pitches are available.... if we ever do.
The Building site compound was a big dissapointment.
