  • Small and friendly tents-only site among spectacular scenery
  • 200 yards from the Shropshire Way
  • Campfires allowed: bring your own firewood
After some new walking inspo? If you’re bored of covering the same old trails, nip off to The Nipstone Campsite, 15 minutes' drive from Minsterley – strolls on scenic Shropshire routes are very much the order of the day here. This dog- and family-friendly site has spectacular views of the Shropshire countryside in all directions, so if you’re up for exploring the area on foot, this is a fine place to do it. It’s located 200 yards from the Shropshire Way Main Route, a long-distance path covering around 200 miles; if that sounds a tad ambitious, stick to the five-and-a-half-mile circular walk on the stunning Stiperstones ridge, and get a look at the Nipstone Rocks while you’re at it. Bit of history? The Bog Visitor Centre is 700 metres from the site, so grab the kids (and the dog, who is also welcome) and head over to the old school house, one of a few remaining buildings from The Bog Village, which was demolished in 1972. Insights into its mining history, people and wildlife can be followed up by tucking into the tea and homemade cake available at the centre. For more extensive eats, a shop and pub are a couple of miles away from the site, and a few more are dotted around Minsterley. You might also like to have a crack at campfire cookery – blazes are permitted, and you can bring wood along. This is a back-to-basics site, so facilities simply stretch to toilets and hot and cold running water.

Local attractions

Whether you plan on walking near or far, there's plenty to see (in fact, even if you don’t leave the site you’ll still benefit from endless views of the countryside). Local walking trails of various lengths take in hills, forests and little villages (and perhaps a pub or two along the way…) and there are plenty of options for pedalling bikes too. Like to head out on horseback? Kids' pony treks and hacks for grownups can be had at Long Mountain Centre (20 minutes' drive). The area isn’t shy of castles, so get some ticked off while you’re here – the National Trust’s Powis Castle and Garden is around a half an hour drive away and Stokesay Castle is about 35 minutes. Shrewsbury can be reached by car in around 35 minutes, opening up a mixed bag of attractions. What will it be… a tour of Shrewsbury prison for an insight into life behind bars, a visit to a falconry to see a variety of birds of prey, or the Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery for a culture kick?

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Honestly, we liked everything. My friends and I had never been to this part of the country and the scenery and hiking were both fantastic. The campsite is beautiful, everyone was respectful, the owner was kind and gave great suggestions on local attractions and the facilities were great. A campfire on the last night finished the weekend perfectly.

Highlights were walking the Stiperstones walk and went wild swimming in Carding Mill Valley Reservoir, a short drive from the campsites.

Disliked: Nothing.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: So quiet, a beautiful area, and welcoming owners. Overall this is a back to basics campsite. Only a toilet and a place to wash dishes (no showers), but this is perfect if you just want a traditional place to stay with no 'luxury' extras.
