  • Secluded Shropshire campsite five minutes' walk from a lake
  • In the hamlet of Colemere; Ellesmere 10 minutes' drive
  • Pet-friendly campsite with a dog-walking area; barbecues welcome
Seeking solace in the Shropshire countryside? Smithy Campsite is a simple spot on the edge of the hamlet of Colemere, a pleasingly rural location just five minutes' walk from the peace and quiet of a lake and nature reserve. This peaceful and secluded family-run site has basic facilities like water points, well-maintained portable toilets and refuse collection areas for recycled waste. Smithy Campsite is a pet-friendly place too, and while there are lots of walks around meres and fields in the local area, an on-site dog-walking area may also come in handy. The pitches here are spacious and have far-reaching views over the local north Shropshire countryside, although the site is surrounded by hedges for extra privacy and shelter from the wind. Barbecues are permitted, but please keep them properly attended to and clear of the ground to make sure the grass remains in good condition. Smithy Campsite is an easy 10-minute drive from the sweet town of Ellesmere, another lakeside location where there are amenities like a post office and a small but well-stocked supermarket. Ellesmere also has a handful of pubs, a selection of restaurants and a sculpture trail to keep you entertained.

Local attractions

Heritage hunters have a lot to keep them busy in the local area, from ace National Trust properties like Chirk Castle (30 minutes' drive) or Erddig Hall (30 minutes) to industrial history at the British Ironwork Centre (25 minutes) and Ironbridge Gorge (45 minutes), a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site. Transport-themed days out at the Cambrian Railway Museum (25 minutes), a refurbished station with steam trains and a café, are also within easy reach. For family-friendly times, try Park Hall (20 minutes), an activity farm with an array of indoor and outdoor play areas, cute animals and nature trails. The kids may also appreciate a trip to BeWILDerwood Cheshire (30 minutes), a huge woodland with a range of rides, slides, zipwires and wobbly bridges. The centre of the ancient town of Shrewsbury (30 minutes) is also close at hand if you fancy a day out shopping or a narrowboat cruise of the canal, while cross-border games of golf are in order at Llanymynech Golf Club (30 minutes), perhaps the only place in the UK where you can play a single round in both England and Wales.
