  • Peaceful riverside grass meadow in the Vale of the White Horse
  • Half-hour drive to Oxford, Blenheim Palace and Cotswold Wildlife Park
  • Easy access to walks in the Cotswolds or Chiltern Hills
Simple can be simply splendid sometimes – peaceful pitches, lovely views and access to lots of great country walks. And that’s just what you’ll get at Lyford Camping, in a grass meadow next to the River Ock in Oxfordshire’s Vale of the White Horse. This is a fine spot for folk looking to get out for walks on their break, as it’s easy to get out to all sorts of trails in the surrounding Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty: the Cotswolds, Chiltern Hills and North Wessex Downs are all nearby. The gorgeous honey-coloured streets of Oxford are half an hour’s drive away too, and there are plenty of wonderful towns and villages to stroll around, like Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water. Back at base, it’s all heavy on the peaceful atmosphere and light on the frills – guests at the generously sized mown pitches have access to portable toilets and rubbish bins but otherwise you’re left to your own devices. Barbecues and firepits are permitted as long as you’re careful with them, but there are also several good pubs within a few miles if you’d rather head out for dinner and drinks.

Local attractions

As you’re staying in the Vale of the White Horse, first port of call should be the horse that it’s named after: the Uffington White Horse is a huge chalk figure carved into the hillside and it’s about 10 miles (20 minutes’ drive) away from Lyford Camping. For more walks, you could head out onto the Thames Path or up into the Cotswolds (half an hour). Meanwhile, other country pursuits are on hand with horse riding (five minutes), fishing (15 minutes) or lake-based antics at Cotswold Water Park (45 minutes). Farmer Gow’s (15 minutes) is a good place to introduce kids to farm animals; if they’d like to see something more exotic, try Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens (half an hour). Of course there’s also much history to explore in the area, whether you’re heading into the colleges of Oxford (half an hour), exploring old estates like Buscot Park (20 minutes) and Blenheim Palace (half an hour) or taking a different approach at STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway (35 minutes).

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Really nice field with great pitches. Lots of space away from other campers. Great instructions and directions sent through prior to our arrival.

Disliked: Only 1 portaloo that doesn’t flush well and was quite dirty at times. Understand this is what you get at a basic site but maybe another toilet would be good.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your comments, maybe need to look at composting toilets! Portaloos difficult to manage.

Pitched up right at the end so felt very quiet and private

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Open field, very few other campers and exactly as described. Back to basics camping, friendly supportive owner. Simply a very quiet field with mown areas for tent at a decent distance from other tents...50m minimum. And a portaloo. Great garden centre/animal farm/falconry and farmshop nearby. Canoeing on Thames 20 mins drive away.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Peaceful Lots of wildlife - incredible birds / a deer / hare / fox! Really spacious campsite - plenty of space for several tents round a campfire on one pitch Clear instructions for reaching the site and settling in Clean portaloo provided with toilet paper No frills but that's what we wanted :)

Disliked: It would great if there was a source of drinking water on site - make sure you bring some with you. They provide some bottled water but it's sat outside in a clear plastic container so not recommended to drink.

From the manager: Hi, Thank you for your comments and glad you enjoyed your stay with the varied wildlife!. I would like to provide running water but the cost is prohibitive due to the site location. The closest running water is a mile away.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: I like the place. It's a field next to river Ock. It's very quiet there. There is a toilet. But there is no other facilities. The landlord is friendly and provided fresh water which was actually everything we needed. We had no problems in finding a flat surface to set up a tent. It's a perfect place for people looking for space to take a breath, go for a walk etc.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Peace & quiet No frills Excellent comms from host prior to arrival & a visit from him to ensure all was ok (whilst not being intrusive), and contact number for if required Pitches very well spaced & clearly demarcated Emergency water & fire extinguishers in case of fire due to very dry/hot conditions Felt like we were in the middle of nowhere!

Disliked: Nothing
