  • Adventurous site set in 250 acres of woodland and other rural scenery
  • A mile from Walesby village and 35 minutes' drive from Lincoln
  • On-site bar and shop; over 40 leisure activities on land and water
If you're looking to alternate between relaxing in 250 acres of Robin Hood country and a whole host of adventurous activities for guests over the age of four, seek out a spot at Walesby Forest in leafy Nottinghamshire. The vast range of leisure activities here should help even those averse to alfresco exercise get moving, with popular options including watersports, climbing, archery and rifle shooting. A friendly team of dedicated instructors is on hand to make sure all that outdoor action takes place in a safe, low-pressure environment. The programme is updated daily, with a flexible play and pay policy to keep it all affordable. Time to swap sporty sessions for a bit of downtime? Take your pick from drinks or snacks at the bar, a poolside snooze or rambles through the site's wild woodland areas, where all sorts of animals can be spotted. Angling fans may find it similarly peaceful to take advantage of the free river Maun fishing opportunities available on site. When it comes to food, there's a handy catering barn (which, with advance notice, can sort meals for guests with special dietary requirements), plus a small shop that stocks plenty of sweet treats and souvenirs. If you'd rather step out for dinner, make your way into Walesby (a mile away), where two popular establishments are all set to serve up pub-cooked food. While there may not be a playground on site, there are 250 acres of space for ball games and adventures.

What customers say

Huge campsite, loads of activities for kids. Pitches are spacious, staff friendly. Toilets/showers need a revamp though – cleanliness and maintenance are a bit iffy. Some electric pitch power issues and pricey extras noted.

Non-electric grass pitch (large, no pets)

Liked The closeness to the amenities. Daughter enjoyed the activities. Blue Peter badge holder. I've knocked the facilities and activities down this time as I think more options could be explored when young children are on site and cleanliness of toilets and showers.

All staff on site very helpful and courteous.
Bar very clean and good choice of food and drink options.

The pool attendant that was organising people in and out of the pool on Saturday did a fabulous job.

Location lots of places to go from site. Rufford, Clumber, Clipstone. Sherwood Observatory. Newark castle and Civil war museum.

Take out menu left on tables in the bar at night, although we didn't choose this option nice to have this perhaps this should be given at the reception at check in.

Disliked Toilets and shower areas need regularly cleaning hourly!!

No BBQs or campfires on this weekend however we took a gas fire and fake flickering fire to give the same camping experience temperature dropped quite significantly. In this case make more things available on display like your blankets, lights a gas fire option perhaps? Or even the nice wooden lanterns you have to paint for kids. Make features of what you have got available.

Think the large white tent on the camping side A could be used for cooler nights when camp fires can't be used perhaps just a small seating area quiet somewhere away from the karaoke to relax.

Shop could stock a lot more items i came one year when you had some lovely necklaces and bracelets. I gave my daughter as tan extra stocking filler for xmas.

No jigsaws. No reading books other than the history on Walesby and only colouring books for children. What about nature books, sticker books word searches or crossword books.

Nice to see some inflatables in the shop for the pool. We took our own a rubber ring donut but nice to see other options available perhaps advertised this at the pool entrance as a young boy was upset it was too deep so my daughter let him have our rubber ring.

Unfortunately one family not us and I hope they raise this they were not happy on the Sunday they had a boy and girl aged 5 and only two activities open for them to do Cave Maze and Low ropes perhaps they should be free if only two things open. The parents then had to purchase two archery sets in the shop.

Non-electric grass pitch (no pets)

Liked Friendly helpful staff, didn’t realise we had booked non electric and Katherine made it very easy for us to move and made us feel very comfortable. Beautiful big grounds with lots to see when walking. Loved staying in field E as felt we were away from the hustle and bustle. Very quiet at night, felt secure as saw security doing their rounds.

Disliked The lack of toilet facilities, so apart from the fact they were so far away there wasn’t enough to cater for the amount of people. One group had electric motor bikes and they just kept riding them all around the fields which was very annoying, so we were surprised that was allowed. The food is advertised as open until 19:00 but closes at 18:30 so couldn’t get any at 18:40 when we went which niggled us as just acting on the information given.

Non-electric grass pitch (no pets, wild)

Liked The price and the location as very near the A1

Disliked When I arrived at around 4.30pm I was given a map of where my pitch was.
I had booked a wild camping pitch as It was just an overnight stay. The map was not clear at all and I drove round for 30 minutes trying to find a sign relevant to my booking. I asked several people if they knew where the wild camping was and they just said it was not where they were as they had electric hook up. I then asked an employee and he pointed to a road and said the toilets were half way down the hill. I drove down the road he pointed to and came back to the main entrance. I gave up in the end and stopped where there was some trees away from anyone else, got to sleep early and left by 6am. I would say things would have been a lot easier if there was a sign say Wild Camping with an arrow. The toilets were not that great either.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Activity programme for children was fab, staff were mostly very friendly and helpful. Huge site with loads to do and lots to explore. Large pitch.

Disliked Not much for under 5s, activity bands were £20 a day, with more than one child this could get quite expensive. Especially with different activities being on different days, you can't do them all in one day. Maybe a family discount or discount on multiple days would help. The toilet/shower block on our field was disgusting, other blocks weren't as bad. Other guests being loud and motorbikes roaring around the site at 11.30pm, contacted the site and nothing was done.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Great site plenty of space to pitch a family size tent without being crowded. Some good amenities but some a little tired and dated. Great for fire pits and bbq. Value for money for camping and activities.

Disliked Could do with better toilet facilities in some areas of the site.

Non-electric grass pitch (no pets, wild)

Liked We chose a wild pitch it was perfect! I loved that you were about to choose where you wanted to go so you could choose to space out from other campers if you wanted to.

The activities on offer were so good, we will definitely be back.

Disliked No lights in the toilet block which made it more difficult at night. But just took torches/phone flashlights and it was all good.

Local attractions

With its tales of Robin Hood, ancient oaks, country houses and lush leafy landscape, Sherwood Forest has something to keep most sorts content. Clumber Park (15 minutes' drive) has long avenues of limes and open heath to stroll through, while over by the Major Oak (10 minutes) you can get acquainted with one of the area's stand-out trees before setting out on several waymarked hiking routes (maps available at the visitor centre next door). Similarly close to base is Go Ape Sherwood (10 minutes), where a medley of segways and zipwires nicely complement any on-site activities you've got up to during your stay. Kids not quite old enough for that kind of activity? Fear not, as families with younger members will find plenty of age-appropriate entertainment at Wheelgate Waterpark (15 minutes) or Sundown Adventureland (20 minutes). Spending time in town is also doable here, as Walesby Forest is just over half an hour from Lincoln's castle, cathedral and urban arboretum. Meanwhile, over in Newark (30 minutes), there's Civil War heritage, antiques shops and weekly markets in a handsome Georgian square, plus hovercraft tours if you fancy something a little different.
