  • Pop-up site in the historic farming village of Laxton, Nottinghamshire
  • History tours in the village; a 15-minute drive to Rufford Abbey
  • Set on medieval fish ponds, near walks, a local pub and historic sites
The wild camping spot at School Farm is tucked into farm fields in the historic village of Laxton, near Newark in Nottinghamshire. It’s historic as it's the last village in England to still use the medieval ‘open-fields’ farming system – if you’re interested in finding out more, there are regular history walks around the village. And that’s not all. School Farm is part of the old Fish Ponds site, where wealthy medieval families would breed fish for their kitchens – you can read all about it on an information board in the camping field, which also edges a footpath leading around the village, taking you to the ruins of Laxton Castle. In fact, this is a smashing base for budding historians. Within a 45-minutes drive, there are medieval abbeys, museums and splendid stately piles to discover. As this is a wild camping site, facilities are simple; portable toilets are available but otherwise you’re left pretty much to your own devices. There are only a handful of pitches, so you can enjoy a peaceful stay, and you can barbecue by your pitch (bring equipment from home). If you’d rather not cook, never fear as there’s an award-winning pub in Laxton village. It’s all of a five-minute walk away, so no need to take the car.
