  • Rural farm-style camping with views of the Humber Bridge
  • On the edge of Barrow upon Humber; Thornton Abbey 10 minute's drive
  • Welcome boxes of fresh produce available to order; dogs allowed
This humble Humber farm in North Lincolnshire is well-placed indeed. Hull's cultural highlights, an old abbey, nature reserves and the coast are all within an easy drive if you choose to make Longfield Farm your base, while on-site attractions like fresh produce and views over grazing animals make staying here that extra bit more relaxing. Much of this area, including Longfield Farm, has views over the impressive Humber Bridge, which helps to make these scenic surrounds a popular destination for walkers and families. Barrow upon Humber's handy butchery, village shop and local pub (booking recommended) are all within a mile of base, while the next town over, Barton-upon-Humber (five minutes' drive), has a well-maintained leisure centre. Coming without a car? Barrow Haven train station is roughly a mile to the north. The main pitching field is flat and in the shape of a triangle. Sometimes you'll be setting up next to the sheep, cows and horses that graze in the neighbouring fields. Well-behaved dogs are welcome here, but please keep them on leads because of the livestock. In terms of facilities, this simple site comes with just portable toilets and a washing-up area for overnight guests. There's one exception to the no-frills vibe though, as you can order welcome boxes with fresh milk, bread, butter, local sausages and eggs straight from the site's hens.

Local attractions

As well as its leisure centre, Barton-upon-Humber (five minutes' drive) has angling opportunities at Pasture Wood Fisheries, a lively arts centre, a sailing club and a waterfront footpath that runs from Humber Bridge Park to Barrow Haven. It's not much further to get to Far Ings National Nature Reserve (10 minutes), where there are bird hides for nature and photography fans. Over the bridge in Hull city centre (25 minutes), visitors have access to family-friendly attractions like The Deep, one of the UK's most popular aquariums (its architecture is rather interesting too). Once you've checked out the city's undersea life, resurface in the city's cultural quarter and head out to the New Theatre or Comedy Lounge for a range of live entertainment. For some heritage, make tracks for Thornton Abbey (10 minutes) and check out the ruins that date all the way back to 1140 AD. Once clued up about the local history, set out to catch a race at Beverley Racecourse (30 minutes) or to catch some rays at coastal resorts like Cleethorpes (35 minutes) and Scarborough (an hour and 20 minutes).
