Pitches (added by manager 09 feb 2023)

  • Pop-up wild campsite edging the River Lee Navigation in Hertfordshire
  • A 15-minute walk to Rye House Kart Raceway and RSPB Rye Meads
  • Pitches in private woodland; bike rides and walks direct from the site
If you like the sound of having a wild camping break while helping to fund a very good cause, have a look at Ayurveda Hoddesdon, an off-grid, pop-up site and CIC-registered Social Enterprise. Set in a copse of hawthorn and weeping willow trees (literally) steps from the River Lee Navigation in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, the two-acre camping field is slowly being turned from wasteland into an outdoor space for the community. With a boundary fence in place for security and privacy, the tree-shaded pitches are on private land that has been carefully cleared by the owners, who are now growing vegetables on an allotment and experimenting with new, carbon-zero ideas on how to rejuvenate the soil and increase the site’s natural biodiversity. This peaceful site is a welcome – and handy – retreat for anyone wanting to escape the city bustle for a day or two’s walking quiet canal-side paths or cycling in the Lee Valley Regional Park. If you do want to get into London, there is also a direct route to London Liverpool Street from the train station 10 minutes' walk away. By car, there are many scenic spots to pay a visit within 30 minutes, including Ware, Broxbourne, Cheshunt, Harlow (with a large shopping centre) and Enfield. All of these have delicious places to eat. For something more active, the Lee Valley White Water Centre is a 20-minute drive away. Please bear in mind that the site is totally off-grid, with no electricity, two compost loos and (non-drinking) water from a man-made well.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: I need to say the site looked good and was well maintained. The lady who welcomed us was very friendly and helpful. Thank you for waiting for us 🪻

Disliked: I was disappointed as we had no sleep whatsoever the train noise was loud and it didn't feel like we were in the middle of nowhere! Too much noise because of that train which was round the corner from the site. The other thing was the Car Park is not on site! You need to walk with all your stuff so please be prepared if you would like to take few bits you will end up walking back and forward to the car park.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: Great location if you really want to go off grid and be umongst nature, there's even a lake nearby where you can take a swim if you're feeling brave! Ideal for those who want to get a break from the hustle and bustle of city life to reset and recharge. It's walking distance from the train station that runs straight to London Liverpool Steet or parking spaces if you choose to drive. It's child friendly with lots for them to get stuck into if they get bored such as arts and crafts or a bit of gardening. Fantastic walking trails that run along the river which is literally a stone throw away. The host were very accommodating, they gave me a hand setting up my tent and even provided me with cushioning to put underneath it for that little bit of extra comfort. I even got a nice cup of coffee when I woke up in the morning. They have taken what was once derelict wasteland and turned it into a space that is biodiverse and eco friendly, full of different types of plants and art that brings the area to life.

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: I was unable to actually stay as I had a family emergency, however I was greeted by the lovely and friendly owner who happily showed me around the site. The site was basic but as she explained this is a new venture and are working and learning as they go. There was a lovely community feel already blooming and I will be booking again once I can.

Disliked: I was not a fan of the noise of the karting track nearby however I would assume that would not be a 24hr issue

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: First time I’ve ever stayed at the campsite and I really enjoyed how small and quiet it was compared to other campsites I’ve been to. Right next to the river and the camping area, toilets, kitchen hut etc were well spaced out and had great people running the campsite, who were always willing to help and were just very kind in general! Was great that there were little gardens, many trees and plants as well as creative art surrounding the campsite and a chance to paint birdhouses for them to use there too! Highly recommend.

Disliked: Quite dark to walk to the portable toilet at night, but as long as you have your own source of light it’s no problem.

Local attractions

Got the kids with you? They should be pleased to hear that Rye House Kart Raceway is 15 minutes’ walk away for karting races on a choice of circuits. All safety equipment is supplied at the venue. Anyone not so keen on belting around a track can also have a go at laser combat and mini golf. Happy to mess about by the water? There’s plenty to do around Ayurveda Hoddesdon: follow the River Lee Navigation from Fieldes Lock (five minutes) down to Lee Valley Boat Centre (50 minutes) and hire a pedalo for a potter down the canal, or watch the gaily painted barges coming through Brick Lock (55 minutes). Birdwatchers head for RSPB Rye Meads Nature Reserve (15 minutes) to follow boardwalks among the reeds and (hopefully) spot kingfishers and snipe along the way. Budding botanists should amble along the River Stort to Hunsdon Mead Nature Reserve (an hour) for colourful displays of wild flowers in early summer. And if you’re out for a stroll with no particular place to go, meander along the river banks to a local waterside pub for a pint and bite to eat.
