  • Simple pitches at a rural Hertfordshire location with fishing pond
  • Harry Potter Studio Tour 40 minutes' drive away
  • Easily accessed from London via train or car
An easy camping break from London? Or perhaps you’re after somewhere that you can mix up city sights with a slice of countryside life? Either way, Dalmonds Camping, in a rural Hertfordshire spot between Hoddesdon and Hertford, may well have just the location you’re looking for. Pitches here are part of a working farm that’s surrounded by fields and woodland in a conservation area yet is only about half an hour from central London by train. Walking, bike rides, horse riding, golf and birdwatching can all be on the menu during your stay here – as can fishing, thanks to the fishing pond on site. And the area’s packed with attractions too, from Paradise Wildlife Park to the Harry Potter Studio Tour. Finding the right balance of urban and rural here is up to you – you could choose to seek out one of the many child-friendly country pubs nearby, embrace the open air by bringing a barbecue to cook at your pitch or head into the medieval market town of Hertford a few minutes’ drive away to check out its various restaurants. However you choose to fill your days, you’ll come back to a simple setup on site, where you’ll be staying in a peaceful paddock flanked by the pond on two sides. You’ll need to be quite self-sufficient here, as there are no toilets, showers or drinking water points on site.

Local attractions

Those of you planning a day out in London can get there easily enough on the train from Hertford (five minutes’ drive). If you’re not quite in the mood for the big city, you can still get your fix of history and culture by looking around Hertford Castle or planning trips to one of the area’s magnificent houses: perhaps Hatfield House (25 minutes’ drive), Knebworth House (half an hour) or Audley End (40 minutes)? Keeping it active and outdoorsy instead, there are many trails to tread in Epping Forest (half an hour), birds to spot at RSPB Rye Meads (10 minutes) and adventurous activities to tackle at the Lee Valley White Water Centre (20 minutes). Plenty of those options will suit families travelling with kids, but if you really want to give them a treat make the short journey to meet the exotic beasts at Paradise Wildlife Park (10 minutes) or book yourselves onto the amazing Harry Potter Studio Tour (40 minutes) – it has to be said, a popular outing for the grownups too…
