Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park: Spacious tent pitches

General

  • Seven-acre family-run site between Newent and Ross-on-Wye
  • Steps away from woodland walks; pub/shops within a mile
  • Playground, small pond, football pitch, games room and treehouse

You'll find quite the heap to do – for kids and big folks alike – at and around Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park, a peaceful seven-acre spot on the Herefordshire/Gloucestershire border near Ross-on-Wye.

First up there's the fishing within a couple of miles… And then there's all the kids' activities on site, including badminton, a football pitch, table tennis and a park area with a boat, sand pit and treehouse den.

Woodland walks and playtime can be accessed directly from the site, as Haywood is close to Queens Wood on the edge of the Forest of Dean; and canoeing, kayaking, fishing, golf, horse riding, an indoor pool, mountain biking and tennis are all available in the surrounding countryside.

Haywood is a family-run site a short drive from the M50, between Newent and Ross-on-Wye, and with a decent range of guest amenities including showers, a toilet block, disabled facilities, a washing-up area, chemical disposal and recycling. Gas cylinders and ice pack freezing are also available for guests.

A village community shop and local pub are about a mile away and easily accessed on foot.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site was small and quiet but welcoming, clean toilets, washing up facilities and a small park for older children. Games area with ping pong table and small shop. They also did pizzas but unfortunately sold out before we got chance to try them (we were told they were good). The owners were lovely. It would be nice to have a park area for younger children but what was there was ok. The showers were ok but the floor drained the wrong way, however there was a notice to say this was being rectified in November. Our pitch was slightly sloping but this wasn’t a problem for us.

There is nothing not to like, firstly the owners, friendly accomodating and happy to help with enquiries and queries. The site is beautiful, easily accessible walks and a short walk into the village, to the pub and shop. Yes the motorway is close by but you really cannot hear it above the birdsong and it simply fades into the distance. The owners have only taken over recently and are busy upgrading the facilities, however compared to some, the facilities are fab, the hottest showers I've experienced and they work hard to keep them clean and tidy, I think it tends to be the users that make the mess!!! The pizzas were amazing and delivered to our camper van and the ice creams were just what was needed after a long walk. Thank you so much we will be returning next year with Friends. An absolute haven and just what we needed, if you want peace, tranquillity but with great facilities and lots of places to visit close by you won't beat Haywood Farm.

Owners are new and extremely friendly and helpful. Site is very secluded in location with forest nearby.

    Disliked:

Most pitches require leveling blocks and even then it was hard to get MH level. Road noise from nearby M5 is constant. Shower blocks are dated and require updating.

From the manager...

Thanks for your review, work on the new showers has already begun.

Local attractions

Woodland walks are seconds from the farm and four golf courses are within a three-mile radius. Sports centres and swimming pools are a short drive away.

The Malvern Hills and the Brecon Beacons are probably the most visited destinations around this part of the England/Wales border, but plenty of other popular picks are around, like canoeing on the River Wye, wandering around the town of Ross-on-Wye, or fishing on the local lakes.

The Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park team also firmly states that the nearby International Centre for Birds of Prey must be visited: it's the oldest birds of prey centre in the world and has lots of opps for seeing many sorts of raptors up close. Go: it's eggscellent.

Pottering around the Forest of Dean is another decent day out: if you're going forestwards, take time to stop off at the ancient woodland site of Puzzlewood and then the Clearwell Caves, mined for thousands of years to extract iron ore and now set up as a mining museum. (It should also be pointed out, just because, that some Doctor Who episodes were filmed here.)

Within driving distance, both Monmouth and Malvern towns are 20 minutes away, and the cities of Hereford and Gloucester within 25.

Must see

  • Eastnor Castle (11.4 kilometres)
  • Goodrich Castle (12.9 kilometres)
  • Gloucester Waterways Museum (17.0 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Westbury Court Garden (13.5 kilometres)
  • Ashleworth Tithe Barn (13.8 kilometres)
