  • Family-friendly Herefordshire site on the banks of the River Wye
  • Hay-on-Wye 20 minutes’ drive; Hereford 25 minutes
  • Fishing and canoe or paddleboard rental on site; food at weekends
England or Wales? Orchard or field? Decisions, decisions… The first one is easy and made for you when you stay at Byecross Farm Campsite: you’ll definitely be in England here (Herefordshire, to be precise), though pretty close to Wales, in the historic border area known as the Marches. As for the second dilemma, only you can choose whether to set up camp in the orchard or the field, since both are available here. The Old Apple Orchard has shaded pitches, but families might prefer the field, not least because kids will have plenty of space to run around. Regardless of where you end up, you’ll be very close to the River Wye, so bring your fishing rod and/or your watersports gear, though you can also rent canoes and paddleboards on site. The folks who run the watersports hire also arrange river trips to Bredwardine (about four miles west) and Hereford (almost 11 miles east). Those who prefer terra firma can explore hiking trails passing through spectacular countryside and taking in woodland-covered hills. Got your canine buddy with you? There are dog-friendly walks at Moccas Hill Wood - Moccas Park National Nature Reserve and at Arthur’s Stone (both 10 minutes’ drive), not to mention epic walks in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons) (35 minutes). On-site amenities include a toilet and shower block and a washing-up area. A small shop sells a few essentials and local beverages; alternatively, there’s a small supermarket in Madley (10 minutes). On Fridays and Saturdays, burgers and pizzas are available at the site.

What customers say

Awesome riverside spot with private, roomy pitches. Staff are super friendly & helpful. Showers are clean with great hot water. Shop's handy and pizzas are a hit. A few minor gripes: no caravan waste disposal, not enough basins for some, and occasional noise. Still, great spot and vibe!

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked A really lovely place, actually the site of our school camp in the 80’s so a wonderful trip down memory lane. So lovely staying on the banks of the river Wye once more. The site was pretty quiet as main season was over so it felt wonderfully peaceful. Facilities were great, good shower and plenty of loos. Owner was very helpful and welcoming despite late arrival, even offered us emergency milk from his own kitchen if we needed it.
An absolute gem

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We stayed in the Orchard as it was easier access to the toilet block for the kids, and closer to the river to launch our paddleboards.
Loved we could choose our pitch, launch from the site, have a fire pit in the evening, the pizza on site was awesome, owners and staff were friendly and welcoming.

Disliked Some people mentioned paying £1 for shower, but honestly, the site is one of the cheaper ones we’ve stayed at, and 5 mins is long enough- plus quick queues for showers - if any!

The site should not advertise that it takes caravans.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Location. It was right next to the river Wye.

Disliked Lack of basic services for caravans having no chemical toilet disposal point.. Also there were very few showers for the amount to people on site. Also the wash basins were inadequate in that there was no hot water and you needed to press down on the tap to get any water out.
It’s definitely the worst site we’ve ever stayed on. We would’ve moved had it not been a bank holiday weekend.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Location, lovely rural site on the River Wye. Space on site not cramped, staff friendly.

Disliked Only 2 showers and 5 toilets for ladies and same for gents for a very large busy campsite, No hot water in hand washing basins and staff found it hard to keep toilet blocks clean. No chemical disposal for toilet tents or caravans although promotional video advertises suitable to caravans and campervans.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The site was great. Liked that areas were seperated by small rows of trees and hedges, rather than it being just a single field. It gave a bit of extra privacy from other groups. Shop was handy for a few bits and bobs (cider and marshmallows!) and the option to order food for Friday and Saturday was very handy and bang on the stated time. Everyone there was very friendly.

Disliked I'm reaching, as i know it a kyaking destination, but we have a 4 year old that would have love a bit of a playground. Not goingbto stop us considering coming again though.

I also initially thought it was a pain to pay a quid for a shower, but happy to pay it for a solid shower that was nice and warm, with good water pressure.

Local attractions

A small market town on the border between England and Wales, Hay-on-Wye (20 minutes’ drive) is famed for its book festival in May, which features talks and events by authors, comedians and musicians. Hay is also the world’s largest second-hand book centre, and it’s easy to spend a day browsing through shelves looking for fascinating titles. Start your visit to Hereford (25 minutes) at Hereford Cathedral – to admire the architecture, sure, but also to marvel at the Mappa Mundi, a medieval map of the world (or rather the parts that were known at the time) decorated with weird creatures and unusual peoples. The city's Museum of Cider displays vintage presses and other items related to this locally made drink. The ruins of Goodrich Castle (45 minutes), overlooking the River Wye, might spark the imagination of the kids and perhaps inspire a passion for medieval history, while Raglan Castle (55 minutes), across the border in Wales, runs events such as falconry displays and crafts days.
