  • Forest of Dean glamping in restored 1950s caravans
  • Fishing, adventure golf and giant maze within a few minutes' walk
  • Retro features with kitchen, heating and bathroom on board
Jaunts around the gorgeous Gloucestershire countryside take on a different flavour when you’re staying at Elton Farm – a break at this farm close to the villages of Newnham and Cinderford means taking a step back in time as you move into original 1950s American trailers surrounded by the stunning scenery of the Forest of Dean. They may be classed as ‘vintage’ these days, but the caravans (known as Jessie and Nellie) are certainly looking good for their age – they've been carefully restored to a state that’s fully in keeping with the 21st century. That means original features are still in place for a real retro vibe, but you’ll also have the benefit of having a full kitchen (fridge, cooker, kettle, the lot…), heating and a private toilet and shower on board. Much is provided here to make life nice and easy for your stay: beds are made up and towels are provided, and you’ll have a firepit for outdoor evenings. The caravans are off grid, but have got 12v electric USB points for charging your phone (just as well, as you’ll probably want to snap a pic or two…) Spending time in and around your caravan is likely to make for a memorable stay – and it’s easy to boost that with some great outings nearby too. Several activities are within a short walk, including adventure golf, fishing and a giant maze, and you can also easily stroll to the banks of the River Severn (for a pint in one of the riverside pubs, perhaps?)

Local attractions

Fancy a day off from driving? One of the handy aspects of this site is how much is within walking distance: it’ll take you five minutes to stroll to Forest of Dean Adventure Golf or to Elton Giant Mazes for a fun time trying to navigate your way out of one of the huge themed mazes or cross the various obstacles of the Activities Maze. After that, perhaps you’ll want to sit quietly at Elton Carp & Catfish Lakes (10 minutes’ walk) for a while… Having a car is rather handy, however, as it’ll allow you to head off for days of canoeing from Symonds Yat, underground adventures at Clearwell Caves or a magical (and kid-friendly) walk along the trails of Puzzlewood – all are about 20 minutes’ drive away. Also within easy driving distance are days out in Gloucester (25 minutes’ drive) and Cheltenham (half an hour) or a stroll around the imposing medieval fortress Goodrich Castle (25 minutes), known for its spectacular views as much as its well-preserved building

Jessie Jetstream on-site touring caravan

Liked: Love location. Plenty of utensils and nice area to sit outside. Bed very comfy

Disliked: Battery going flat on 2nd day so had no lights or hot water in the evening all we could do was go to bed early.Owner wasnt much help. Didnt ask if we had been ok overnight.Gas had been left on when we got there so had to stay outside for a while why we ventilated the caravan.

From the manager: Apologies for the technical hitch. Upon restoring the power we found that the awning lights were on. This may have contributed to the power drain. Further investigation will be needed. Hope this didn’t spoil your stay.

Very quiet, only us in the field. Good location for visiting places.
