  • Family-run wild camping site in the Wye Valley National Landscape
  • Peaceful spot a couple of miles from Lydbrook in the Forest of Dean
  • Within walking distance of the river Wye, a café and a pub
You know that excited feeling you get on holiday, first thing upon waking? You should be pretty familiar with that after your first night at Lydbrook Wild Camping, for it has gorgeous views of sloping countryside within the Wye Valley National Landscape. If you're a keen wild camper, even more so… Set a couple of miles outside of Lydbrook in the Forest of Dean, this wild camping site is incredibly peaceful. While it’s a family-run business, there is always someone on hand to help you set up and get started, and they also provide firewood for free. A limited number of firepits are also available to use, but they may be popular, so they’re subject to availability. Roast your breakfast over the fire or walk 20 minutes to the local café for a bit of coffee and brunch. Very handily, the field is 20 minutes’ walk from the local pub and the river Wye too (some folks ditch their canoes on the riverside and walk up the lane for a drink). In Lydbrook, five minutes’ drive away, there is also a small shop, a fish and chips takeaway, a hairdresser’s, a church and a doctor’s surgery. For a little canoeing, outdoor activity centres are 15 minutes’ drive away and can drop you off or pick you up at a designated point along the Wye. For a little stroll instead, take off onto river walks directly from the site, first following the local river When. Forest of Dean attractions are 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

If you like to get your bearings with a scenic stroll when you arrive someplace new, Coppett Hill (15 minutes’ drive) is an excellent place to start. From the 188-metre peak, you should be able to see all the way back to Lydbrook, as well as towards the Forest of Dean and the Black Mountains. One of the most famed places in the Wye Valley National Landscape is Abaty Tyndyrn / Tintern Abbey (half an hour), a ruined Cistercian abbey surrounded by the valley’s forested slopes. Here, there are excellent pubs and more trails to get out onto such as the Devil’s Pulpit and the nearby Offa’s Dyke path. For trails within the stunning Forest of Dean, begin with the easy Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail (10 minutes) or head to the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre (10 minutes) to rent a pair of wheels rather than walk. That’s not the only way to travel around the forest, however, with the Dean Forest Railway running steam trains from Lydney and Parkend. The Dean Forest Railway Parkend Station (15 minutes) is the closest stop to the site.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nothing - the campsite doesn't appear to exist!

Disliked: 1800hrs we arrived at the exact coordinates of the site as stated on booking. My alarm bells rang as it was clear to me that the terrain and overall geography was completely different to that depicted in the photos. There were no obvious signage for a campsite, and no obvious entries.

On the off-chance that the address/coordinates stated on Pitch-Up were not quite correct, we drove the full length of Tump Lane, but still there was no site, nor terrain appropriate for pitching.

We called the mobile number provided on booking, many times but no-one answered.
