General

  • Peaceful rural accommodation set on a small field bordered by trees
  • A 10-minute drive from Chesterfield; 25 minutes from the Peak District
  • Cosy bell tent with woodturning stove, barbecue and firepit provided

The Bothie is a small and secluded site set in a peaceful Derbyshire field. Stays here are fully secure (with a lockable gate) and very private indeed – you'll have sole use of the amenities and of these grassy surrounds (which, being west-facing, are something of a suntrap).

The bell tent you'll be settling down in is high spec, with a woodburning stove, oven and cosy furnishings. The toilets and showers here are well-kept and in keeping with The Bothie's adventurous spirit – there's a dry composting loo sheltered by trees and a similarly wild battery-operated jungle shower (super for a refreshing scrub once you’ve got the knack). The materials used for all this kit are canvas, natural wood and stone.

While you're free to get cooking in the tent, there are more food prep options on hand in the adjoining gazebo, where a gas-fired stove and a charcoal barbecue are stored. Firewood and other bits of fuel are provided to get you started.

This spot may feel a world away from the toing and froing of busy roads, but it's actually about a five-minute drive from here to the speedy M1 and A617. That makes it all the easier to get here and, once unpacked, to get out and explore the surrounding area, whether you head for Chesterfield town centre and its far-famed crooked spire (10 minutes' drive) or the Peak District National Park (25 minutes).

Closer to base, those looking for a sweet treat should head for the local honey farm that’s a few minutes' walk away. The nearest supermarket is 10 minutes' drive away.

The Bothie was really nice. The hosts were very organised and Jamie had sent information in advance and had provided wood for us so that we could light a fire/use the stove. The tent inside was very spacious and clean as was the bedding. Everything that is needed to prepare a meal is also available.

The location was also convenient for access to the peak district or other towns nearby.

Only one tent at the site, owners were very attentive and helpful. Good location for walks etc. Fresh flowers and vegetables left by the owners was a nice touch. Would definitely stay again. Everywhere was clean and good condition. (Bell tent was new). Had everything you could need. Saves the hassle of taking own tent etc.

I hope they make a great little business from it as you could tell they were genuine people.

We had a really fantastic stay at The Bothie over the August bank holiday weekend. We are a family of 4 with 2 boys, aged 9 and 12, and they loved it! It was great to have the plot to ourselves and plenty of space for games of football and frisbee. Jamie and Clare were really lovely hosts, their local knowledge was so useful as we are not from this area. The bell tent was spotless and very comfortable (loved the twinkly lights) and the real fire pit was great! The jungle shower also worked perfectly. Great spot, really convenient for the M1 and close to some beautiful walks.

Hi Angela, thanks so much for your lovely review. It looked like you were having a good time and I'm glad the boys enjoyed it. They clearly have a penchant for outdoorsy / bushcraft type activity and the spot is ideal for that. Hopefully you can visit again.
Best wishes, Jamie and Clare

Lovely set up in really pleasant surrounds.09/02/2020

We spent a great (rainy) weekend here. It is a lovely set up in really pleasant surrounds. The tent is very spacious with a very comfy bed, nice furnishings and plenty of lamps and torches. And would have been more spacious only that we had our toddler’s travel cot in it. The wood burner makes the tent very cosy but if like us you don’t have the knack for keeping the fire going, maybe ask the very helpful James for some tips. It’s lovely at night, with the little fairy lights around the tent – it’s probably quite romantic if you don’t have two children in tow. The kitchen area in the gazebo next to the tent has everything you need for self-catering. The "jungle" shower is very easy to operate and a bit of fun with kids. We did a really nice three-mile walk from the tent that took in woodlands, farmland and country lanes in a loop. The locals were so friendly. James and Claire are great hosts – so enthusiastic and eager to help you settle in and enjoy the break. They couldn’t have done any more for us and we particularly loved the fresh fruit and veg that was delivered just before our meat feast bbq! We would highly recommend and hope to be back.

Thanks for your lovely review Clara, it was a pleasure hosting your family and I'm glad you enjoyed the weekend despite the weather! We both hope you return and hopefully we'll have it set up so you can pick your own fruit in the field too.

Super bell tent; really cosy and comfortable. Everything provided from crockery, cutlery and wine glasses, to a two-burner stove, kettle and Kelly kettle. Also a washing-up bowl, tea towels and drying mat. Heat enough water to fill up the ‘jungle shower’ water container to the brim, for a shower better than some campsite facilities!
The very friendly and attentive owners have thought of everything! Beautiful flowers on arrival added a lovely touch too.

Thanks for your review Karen and Gary. It's good to know that the site fulfilled your requirements and yes....I'm particularly proud of the jungle shower too. Hope to see you again some time. J and C
