  • Working farm site in the Peak District with far-reaching views
  • A mile and a half from Mam Tor via a path; Castleton a mile
  • Next to a pop-up café (open weekends); dogs allowed
Hankering for a stunningly rugged landscape full of opportunities for hiking, cycling, climbing and other outdoor activities? On a working farm within the Peak District National Park, Castleton Camping is the place to be. Regardless of whether you've come here to scale Mam Tor, the high peak a mile and a half from the site that’s accessible via a footpath, or whether you simply fancy a change of scenery, a stay at this laidback rural site opens up ample possibilities. This place is half a mile from the small village of Castleton, which is well-served by pubs and cafés. It’s a peaceful area and those of you who like your breaks full of rural hikes will be happy to find that there’s great access to local footpaths, many of which can be reached straight from the farm gates. If you need a light bite before you set off down yonder, a small pop-up café just next to the site is open on weekends for snacks. The amenities here are simple, with just a portable toilet available, but self-sustaining guests are welcome to set up campfires and barbecues. Please note that Castleton Campsite does not have running water. Castleton Camping also embraces well-behaved dogs but asks that they are kept on a lead at all times when around the site.

Great Peak District spot near Mam Tor. Basic facilities, clean portaloos, honesty box. Castleton nearby. Peaceful, friendly. Fields can slope, no running water/showers. Good for short stays.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Amazing view of Mam Tor, loads of space in the beautifully maintained field, clean 'proper' toilets and the honesty box was a lovely touch. Really lovely welcome on arrival. We camped in a summer storm, but even that didn't ruin the experience at this lovely location!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Absolutely stunning setting, easy to set-up and the site owner will pay a visit to ensure you have everything you need. Easy walk to Castleton for pub lunches or activities outside of loads of hill walking from the "doorstep"

Reasonable toilets, just a bit of a queue at 10pm and early morning on the Saturday!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Quiet, beautiful surroundings, well kept grounds really pleasant for camping on

Disliked Toilets were quite smelly not just in them but within a number of metres of them so just bear in mind when pitching tent. Also the taps clearly stated not drinking water so we had to ration the drinking water we brought with us. Not terrible issue but would be useful to have a clean water tap like we have had at other similar campsites.

Non-electric grass campervan pitch

Liked Perfect location to explore mam tor/the great ridge and any one of the caverns. Plus close enough to castleton to wander down and enjoy one of the many pubs.
Toilets and sinks always kept very clean.

Disliked If there were showers on site I’d stay longer

Local attractions

With lots of historic sites to see, landscapes to hike and caverns to descend into, the first bit is deciding where to start. For days hiking, the Pennine Way starts in Edale (15 minutes’ drive) and heads out onto moors, past reservoirs and gritstone edges. A hike with a view is certain at Ladybower Reservoir (15 minutes) too. Five miles through Cave Dale (30 minutes' walk), a limestone valley, is just as splendid. Places you might want to visit on the way include Castleton village and Peveril Castle - and there are views towards Mam Tor and The Great Ridge too. Caverns on your ‘to-explore’ list? Take an underground boat trip in Speedwell Cavern (35 minutes), investigate the Blue John stone in Treak Cliff Cavern (five minutes' drive) or learn rope-making in Peak Cavern (25 minutes' walk). When it’s time to extend your learning to history in the Peak District, Peveril Castle (25 minutes) above Castleton village is one the closest ruins. For somewhere that has survived the test of time, and now makes a rather excellent picnicking location, is Chatsworth House (30 minutes' drive). The estate also has a farmyard and playground.
