  • Wild camping in a 100-acre Derbyshire woodland
  • A 20-minute drive from Matlock and Carsington Water
  • Bushcraft class included; stag and hen parties are welcome
Up for an introduction to bushcraft and wild camping? Then you'll want to take a closer look at Wildwood Adventure Camps, a destination for proper wild camping a mile from Ambergate and the river Derwent. It's set in a 100-acre woodland in Derbyshire called Shining Cliff Woods, which is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. Wild camping in Shining Cliff Woods means being free to build lean-to tarpaulin dens, set up makeshift rope swings and light up campfires pioneer-style with a fire striker and kindling (all the above gear is provided). Bushcraft guru Row will be around to help you with all your woodland DIY, as well as to assist in bringing water. Full details of where to meet and your activities itinerary are provided once you've secured your spot. You'll need to bring your own food to the site. You may want to come prepared with dehydrated meals and ration packs, as the nearest shop is a 10-minute drive away. Row can give you some handy pointers for cooking dinner over an open grill; there are firepits and kettles for you to use. Firewood is provided during the day, but for evening fires, bags are available for a small fee. In terms of practicalities, you'll need to park at the local pub about 10 minutes' drive down the road from the camping area, from which you will be escorted to the woods (a wheelbarrow is provided to help you lug your stuff up to base, but rucksacks are recommended). It's also worth knowing that there aren't flushing toilets here – you can opt for well-maintained chemical models or, if you're feeling adventurous, you can dig your own. Kids should find plenty to keep them entertained here: there are ample trees to climb in, a stream to splash through or build dams in and plenty of space in the woods and old quarries for them to run free. Meanwhile, grownups looking for a proper break from the demands of modern life can sign up for expert-led forest bathing sessions that focus the senses on the nature all around. There are also a limited number of hammocks which can be hired. If you fancy an eco-friendly break, it's worth noting that there's also a railway station in the village (roughly 20 minutes’ walk).

Local attractions

If you've come here, you'll likely be interested in other outdoorsy activities. Carsington Water (20 minutes' drive), a gorgeous reservoir just to the south of the Peak District, has kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing and other watersports opportunities for all levels and may prove popular. There are also two Go Ape treetop adventure courses within 45 minutes at Buxton and Sherwood Pines. If you fancy treading some of the gorgeous Tissington Trail you could head to the route's southernmost point at Ashbourne (20 minutes) to explore gentle agricultural landscapes. Things get a bit more rugged the further you head into the Peak District National Park, and the spectacular Hope Valley and Castleton caves are around an hour from base. If you'd like a break from being a man or woman of the wild, head to the elegant interiors and well-kept gardens at Chatsworth House (30 minutes), a huge country estate owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. Matlock (20 minutes) may also prove pleasing with its mix of arcades, cafés and kid-friendly theme parks like Gulliver's Kingdom.
