Lime Tree Holiday Park: Tent field

General

  • Valley site a mile from the Peak District town of Buxton
  • Surrounded by woodland and with a gorge and viaduct at one end
  • Playground, games room, gas exchange and well-stocked shop

Travelling types, move Buxton to the top of your list. The Derbyshire spa town and gateway to the Peak District was once shortlisted as one of the top three most attractive places in the British Isles (Cork and Hastings were also acclaimed: move them to the top of your list as well).

A mile from town and the closest site to Buxton is Lime Tree Holiday Park, in its own valley in a Special Landscaped Area, surrounded by farmland and with a wooded limestone gorge and old railway viaduct at one edge. (Maps, brochures and sheets of information on local attractions are at the Lime Tree reception, or ask one of the helpful staff for advice on things to see and do.)

Facilities on site include an adventure playground; an indoor games room with pool table, kids’ corner and TV/DVDs; a well-stocked shop with local produce and an ice block freezing facility; gas cylinder exchange, and a microwave for heating babies’ or toddlers’ food.

Among the amenities are toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a launderette with ironing facilities.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The grocery shop is open between 19/04 et 31/08.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

Single-sex bookings of 3 or more people (excluding couples) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 3 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The only downside is the fact that fires are not allowed on the camping area.

Facilities very good, staff friendly. Showers clean and good size cubicles. Plenty of space in the camping field. Quiet, no noise from campers or elsewhere.

    Disliked:

A little bit pricey for a small tent (£21 per night). I only had a small pop-up tent! Paid the same as a 3-bedroom family tent! That was my only negative comment.

Very peaceful, amazing view and loads of space, not far from shops ect. Toilets/showers were clean. I would go back and recommend the trip.

    Disliked:

The lack of toilets! There was no way we were walking to the toilets during the night it was extremely dark and down a very steep hill, during the night we had to make do. I recommend taking a portable toilet or something you can use to wee in. Be careful where you pitch as you could easily be on a slope but we were fine. No WiFi on the pitches at all

Great location, clean toilets and showers, quiet and peaceful camping field apart from the owls at night! We didn't utilise the games room but it's a decent addition for getting some WiFi connection and a distraction for an hour or two. Well maintained grounds, with good views across the surrounding countryside

    Disliked:

Needs portaloos or something similar in the camping fields, the 5 minute walk to the toilet block might not sound like much but there's a steep hill to navigate and it's a fair distance in the middle of the night.
I do feel like the camping field is a bit of an afterthought, the site are obviously developing the static caravan business which is happening around the camping field, and I wonder whether once all the other fields are developed whether the camping field will then be gotten rid of too to make way for more caravans. I do hope not, as the site is lovely, but the camping facilities need a bit more love and it's these points which would prevent me from staying here again unfortunately.

All site was quiet with very clean facilities. Very polite, helpful and friendly staff from the moment of booking to end of stay. Play area was spot on for younger children. Short walk into the town centre was easily done over a lovely field then down by the side of a picturesque river.

    Disliked:

The site shop could have carried a little more stock with a few more essentials such as bread, pasta, rice etc but I imagine with the current climate it’s hard to predict what’s needed and ensuring everything is fresh and not wasted

Proximity to both Buxton town centre and the midshire way with the associated walking paths.
    Facility’s were good and clean.
    Friendly staff.
We would return there, with the below caveat.

    Disliked:

We pitched our tent on one of the ‘terraced’
pitches, it was too close to the playground, and everybody had to walk past us to get to the facilities. I have to stress tho that that was our choice, however we wouldn’t pitch there again.

Really lovely campsite. Great views from the tent camping field of the viaduct and cute cows in the field next door. Staff were so friendly and the toilets/showers were fab, loved the radio! Short walk into Buxton but you might need a torch if you’re walking back in the dark after the pub.

    Disliked:

It was a little walk to the toilets/showers from the tent camping field but it was fine really.

Local attractions

There’s quite a bit to immerse yourself in at the spa and market town of Buxton, one of the most popular destinations in the Peak District.

Like Bath in the south, Buxton was founded as a spa town by Romans and became popular in Georgian times for the supposed health-giving properties of its spa water. Fill up your water bottle at St Anne's Well in front of the Crescent then go on a Buxton tour to see its Georgian architecture and smart landscapes including the award-winning ornamental gardens at the Pavilion, and the Buxton Opera House, the highest in the country.

The Peak District as a whole is full of market towns stuffed with local produce and interesting attractions: go to Bakewell for the essential eponymous tart; Leek for Rudyard Lake and the steam train; Ashbourne for a couple of hundred listed buildings, and fellow spa town Matlock Bath. If you don’t mind travelling a bit further, Sheffield and Manchester can both be reached in an hour to an hour and a quarter.

Also nearby is Castleton with Norman Peveril Castle and four show caves; if going underground is your thing, also check out the caves at Poole’s Cavern just outside Buxton. And there’s caving (and climbing) aplenty all around the Peak District National Park, along with stacks of outdoor pursuits like hot air ballooning, gliding, watersports and biking the Tissington and Manifold trails.
