  • Back to basics Peak District site with a view over Millers Dale
  • A mile to the Monsal Trail; 15 minutes' drive to Buxton and Bakewell
  • Farm shop and café on site; firepits available to hire
Bunk up in a barn at Beltonville Farm for a brill time in the White Peak part of the Peak District – this site’s just a mile from the Monsal Trail and therefore splendidly placed for a strolling, cycling or horse-riding holiday in Derbyshire. When you’re not tottering along this disused railway line transformed into a pretty path, soak up the views over Miller’s Dale; the park is in an elevated position looking out across this Site of Special Scientific Interest’s rock-studded landscape. Chillout sessions are of course boosted by having nosh to chomp on, so drop by the farm shop on site before dusk to pick up bits and bobs such as local veg. The site also has its own café, the Cow Shed Café, which is open every day from 9am. There are regular live music events at the on-site café, mostly on weekends, including live bands, tribute acts and karaoke; on these nights only, cask ales, wines, spirits and beer or cider are up for grabs. Rather a meander followed by a meal out? Map your way to one of several local pubs within a three-mile radius instead for supper. This is a back to basics site but it's well maintained and stretches to such luxuries as toilets and showers. There's also a washing-up area and facilities for people with disabilities. Wood can be purchased at the park for the firepit.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (eight person)

Liked: Beautiful site, nice grassy pitches, cafe breakfast fantastic quality (but place badly run leading to waits for tables and food).
Amazing views and walks in the area.

Disliked: Overpriced. For the fees charged I expect better facilities - toilet block was cramped and run down, no hot water in the washing up area and had to pay extra to use showers. With hundreds of campers and only 4 showers the charge did help with queues for shower not taking too long- but maybe provide tokens at check in.

Site very busy on Saturday. Pitches poorly managed- returned after day out we struggled to access our site to park car. I was thankful that fires were banned that night by the fire service. Would have been a recipe for disaster tents packed close together, high winds, alcohol excess + open fires.

From the manager: Hi there,

Thanks for your review and comments - we are glad to hear that you were impressed by our location and cafe, although I am sorry to hear that you were left waiting for your food. We are very busy over bank holiday weekends and limited by space for tables in the cafe area.

We work hard to maintain our current facilities, while exploring plans for newer facilities in the future. Our showers are charged due to past misuse, as explained on the welcome sheet provided at check in. We would recommend visiting at times other than bank holidays if wishing for a quieter stay.

Many thanks,
Beltonville Farm

Non-electric grass tent pitch (eight person)

Liked: Checked in, the staff are very nice and friendly. We could choose anywhere we wanted to pitch in the field.
Had drinking water points all round the field.
The cafe was great had plenty of food to choose from and tasted nice. There's a small shop on site which is handy.
The campsite is in a great location not far from Bakewell and Buxton.

Disliked: The tap Water pressure where you wash your pots isn’t very good.
They could do with cleaning the toilets more often and it would be nice to have a hook in the toilets to hang your stuff up when your having a wash.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (four person)

Liked: All staff very friendly and helpful, had a beer festival on which was great for a rainy afternoon. Clear instructions/rules very helpful.

Disliked: Not enough toilets or showers, toilets were not cleaned the entire time we where there so got worse by the hour.
Quite overcrowded, camping much closer than I have at other camp sites. Feel like it was over sold. Shop didn’t open until 9 which is late for campers in my opinion.

From the manager: Hi there,

Thanks for your review and comments, and we are glad to hear that you enjoyed our beer festival! I am sorry that you didn't find our facilities adequate - our toilets and shower block are cleaned at 4:30am each morning and again around midday, when the site is quietest. We understand that it is more difficult to keep them sparkling when the site is full on bank holidays!

Thanks,
Beltonville Farm

Unfortunately, my experience at this site was far from what was advertised. Key features like the fire pits were not available, with the excuse of dry weather conditions — something that was not clearly communicated beforehand. Had I known this in advance, I likely would not have booked.

The on-site café was also not serving hot food, and the only options offered were basic sandwiches and cakes. Again, there was no proper notice about this change until arrival.

What disappointed me even more was the attitude of the management. Instead of acknowledging the shortcomings or offering a sincere apology, they responded in a defensive and dismissive tone, which I found unprofessional.

The surrounding nature is indeed beautiful, but unfortunately, the service and guest care did not meet expectations. I hope the management reflects on this and improves how they communicate and treat their guests in the future.

From the manager: Hi there,

We are sorry to hear that your stay was not as you expected. Our fire pit policy always includes the stipulation that we will suspend their use during dry weather conditions for the safety of everyone on site. We have had numerous local moor fires in the area recently given the extended drought and we don't want to endanger our customers with the same. We don't see the safe use of fire pits as an 'excuse.'

Our decision not to allow fire pits over the weekend was posted everywhere publicly available weeks in advance. The same goes for our closure of food service a couple of hours early on Saturday and Sunday due to an event on site (where hot food was available). Our cafe served hot food during all other hours.

I apologise if this was not communicated to you effectively on your arrival, but we found most people very understanding of our changes to fire pit use for the safety of the campsite and everybody else on it.

Thanks,
Beltonville Farm

Local attractions

Squidged between Bakewell and Buxton (15 minutes’ drive from either), Beltonville has a nifty location near two of Derbyshire’s most popular towns. Make a foray to the former for River Wye wanders, passing by the medieval arched stone bridge, and the latter to see around some stunning architecture. Highlights on the heritage trail around Buxton Spa include the Georgian-era crescent, the Roman baths and the cupola-topped Devonshire Dome; for older buildings, the village of Castleton (25 minutes), lying in the lee of Mam Tor, has the Norman ruins of Peveril Castle to peer at. This spot’s also the gateway to the Blue John caves, the only places on the planet where the semi-precious Blue John stone can be found. Cast your eye over the largest intact piece ever mined on display at Treak Cliff Cavern (25 minutes), which also has some rather sizable stalactites and stalagmites for geologist types to gaze lovingly upon. Those aiming to give their walking boots a good workout here have plenty of choice: it's well located not just for the Monsal Trail and Millers Dale but also Chee Dale, Tideswell Dale and Winnets Pass.
