  • Basic family-friendly campsite in the Derbyshire Dales
  • Crich Tramway and Matlock Bath within 10 minutes' drive
  • Dog-friendly site with links to Midshires Way and Cromford Canal walks
Peaceful strolls, Peak District adventures and fab rural scenery are some of what makes Hankin Farm Campsite a peachy holiday base. And peachy it is indeed… this basic, family-friendly site in the Derbyshire Dales has splendid views over Crich Stand and the added bonus of being 10 minutes' drive from the edge of the Peak District National Park for those of you who are up for lots of outdoor exploration. This farm is between the villages of Alderwasley and Whatstandwell and 10 minutes' drive from Belper's numerous shops and other amenities, so coffee shops, pubs, takeaways and supermarkets are all well within reach. The nearest railway station is a mile away in Whatstandwell, making it possible to get to Hankin Farm Campsite without a car. Peaceful walks are part of the local area’s charm, including connections to the Midshires Way, the Cromford Canal and Shining Cliff Woods. That isn’t all though, as all sorts of kid-pleasing activities are very close at hand too, including Crich's well-known tramway museum, Matlock Bath's various amusements and theme parks like Gulliver's Kingdom. The roomy and dog-friendly pitches have access to separate male and female showers and toilets, plus a washing-up area. And as long as you use common sense and follow instructions from the site’s staff, barbecues and campfires are permitted on the pitches.

Liked: This is a lovely relaxed farm campsite with clean facilities. I was greeted by the friendly owners on arrival and shown around. You can camp where you like in their large field, with a great view of Crich Stand. The site is popular with all kinds of campers on a Bank Holiday weekend but I never had to queue to use the facilities. The toilets have loo roll and washing up liquid and sponges are provided in the dishwashing area. Showers are free. The ground was pretty easy to drive tent pegs into, even after a spell of very dry weather. Hankin Farm is a 15 minute walk to the site from Whatstandwell train station if you can carry your kit up a moderate hill. I did a 14km AllTrails circular walk from the site and it was very enjoyable with varied scenery throughout - 'Crich to Whatstandwell to Quarry Circular'.

Disliked: I'm a light sleeper and did need to make use of my earplugs. A few campers were yelling on one night and someone blasted their car radio at 6.30am. I think this is a common problem at campsites everywhere now though. I wasn't keen on the Family Tree pub in the village - I fancied a post-walk beer but was completely ignored by staff and ended up leaving after waiting a while. They only have Heineken on tap and the rest is bottled beer - it feels more like a foodie place than a sweaty walker's pit stop! But that's just my experience.

From the manager: Hi James, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay. From memory we were more than welcoming and accommodating to you and your family, the only reason I think you might be upset is when I said you couldn't bring your sons 50cc motorbike on site as it would be dangerous and disturbed our other guests.

Nice site. Good value.

Liked: The price is good. Facilities are basic, but adequate.

Disliked: The sloping site! We did manage to find a part of the field where it was only a slight slope and it didn't cause any problems. Elsewhere you will need levelling blocks.

Local attractions

Plot out the way to the Peak District… will it be fish and chips by the river in Matlock Bath (10 minutes' drive) or taking the cable car to the Heights of Abraham’s underground caverns (10 minutes) that gets your attention first? Gulliver's Kingdom (10 minutes) is just outside the town too for those of you with kids tagging along. Places that bring a little of history to your holiday are easy to find around here. There are period buildings and vintage trams ready for boarding at Crich Tramway (10 minutes), tours and walks around the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cromford Mills (10 minutes) and the Nine Ladies (25 minutes) stone circle to see. Belper (10 minutes) is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site – so you'll be well-set to learn more about the Peak District's industrial heritage – and for other interesting little places, Wirksworth (10 minutes) has a lively marketplace, heritage centre and a museum with the bones of old villagers. For those of you with an artistic streak, Denby Pottery Village (15 minutes) runs pottery painting in its craft studio, or you could look inside the farm shop and factory shop to see what goodies are available to take home.
