  • Adults-only Peak District site on the edge of Alstonefield village
  • Buxton half an hour’s drive; Chatsworth House 35 minutes
  • Quiet site 10pm–7am; hiking paths passing right outside
Whether you’re after a peaceful holiday (by which, read one undisturbed by screaming children), a romantic break or a hiking trip in the Peak District, you should consider Smithyfields Campsite, on the outskirts of the Derbyshire village of Alstonefield, with its pretty stone cottages. How close is the nearest pub, you ask? Well, there are several nearby, including a pub in Hope, 20 minutes' walk away and another in Wetton, five minutes' drive away. And now you know where you’ll spend the majority of your evenings while here… But please, no rowdy drinking songs on your return from the pubs: this is a quiet site between 10am and 7am. For food only, there's a Michelin-recognised restaurant in the village, five minutes' walk away, which requires an advance booking. One look at the epic countryside views from this adults-only site (though puppies are welcome, as well as adult dogs), and chances are that even the least active of guests will feel moved to explore the surrounding hills, and the valleys carved by the Dove and Manifold rivers. Paths starting directly from the site take you to Thor’s Cave and Reynards Cave (both about one hour’s walk) or to the ruins of Throwley Old Hall (two hours). Or you can hike or cycle along the 13-mile Tissington Trail, which links Ashbourne to Parsley Hay along a disused railway line. The site has facilities such as powerful hot-water showers (blissful, after a day hiking up hills and down dales), plus toilets, a washing-up area and an Elsan disposal point. Barbecues are allowed, and you can stock up on grillable food items in Hartington (10 minutes’ drive) or Ashbourne (15 minutes).

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch (small)

Liked: Toilet/shower facilities were the best we’ve ever used on a campsite. The site itself is located well in a lovely, picturesque village - only a stones throw away a couple of local (and highly recommended) pubs.

Bertie shepherd's hut (pet friendly)

Liked: The site was lovely and the amenities were great the log burner was fantastic in the shepherd hut spotlessly clean

Disliked: Because of the weather conditions the steps and the decking area leading up to the shepherd's hut became dangerously slippery I would ask the owners if they thought about using artificial grass on the stair treads to combat this issue

From the manager: Hi thanks for your feedback, we've taken it onboard and now added some non-slip strips to the steps to avoid any accidents. Thanks Smithyfields Campsite

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch (small)

Liked: First time camping as a solo female traveler, wanted to do this for a while so I could hike alone early the next day but was nervous . (Theres so many great walks from Alstonefield). I felt very safe and relaxed here. Its a gated campsite, small and immaculate. The pitches are level and separated. There’s neat manicured hedges round the campsite that makes everything look tidy and gives a private feel to the pitches . The bathroom facilities are not only spotless they are gorgeous, as good as any boutique hotel. I have camped for years and have never had a rainfall shower! The site is peaceful, another review mentioned noise from flight path. Its not under a flight path as such but hiking in the Peak District you can always hear planes without actually seeing them, the sound echoes round the hills so you’ll get this wherever you camp. Its not very loud but if you are a light sleeper and this will bother you bring ear plugs. Will definitely be back for a hike next year but will stay two nights

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The site is small and quiet. The toilet and showers are lovely! A great site!

Disliked: At certain points there being only 2 showers meant there was a bit of a wait. Not awful, just a little frustrating.

Electric grass tent or campervan pitch (small)

Liked: Really nice clean campsite. Incredibly quiet and really chilled out. Stunning facilities, amazing views and a great site.

Disliked: Not a knock against the campsite but the lack of a local pub. Nearest one is the Watts Russell a 15 minute ish walk away (only open 5-9). That's the only dislike... and I had to dig for that. 15 mins walk is nothing.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch (small)

Liked: Super quiet adults only site. Easy check in & site access. Toilets were beautiful with quirky "public footpath" signs, radiators, loads of hot water, clean. Level and spacious sites. Privacy as large hedges separate areas. Lots of walks available from the site

Disliked: Advertised as a pub in the village however it is only open Thursday- Sunday so the nearest pub was a drive away.

If you’re into stately homes and elegant country mansions, head to centuries-old Haddon Hall (25 minutes’ drive), where a Medieval Park is inhabited by voles, hares and birds. Then continue on to Chatsworth House (35 minutes), which contains a renowned art collection ranging from ancient Roman artefacts to modern works by the likes of Lucian Freud. The market town of Buxton (half an hour) is known for its Georgian architecture and thermal waters, which you can sample at St Ann’s Well, a public fountain. After checking out the displays at the Buxton Visitor Centre & The Buxton Crescent Experience, take the weight off your feet at The Pavilion Gardens, on the banks of the River Wye. A cable-car flight at the Heights of Abraham (half an hour) takes you high above the Derwent Valley. When you’ve had your fill of expansive Derbyshire Dales views, you can head underground and catch a light show in the man-made Great Masson and Great Rutland caverns.
