  • Family park three miles from the Peak District town of Ashbourne
  • Seven and a half miles from Alton Towers
  • Indoor pool, licensed shop and picnic area
If you had to pick a Peak District place, you'd be displaying tiptop taste if you went for Ashbourne. For there are many whys: it’s at the southern tip of the Peak District and a gateway to the same; it leads straight on to the Tissington Trail, and it’s sevenish miles from the heady heights of Alton Towers. More? It's also been the site of a raucous game of football every Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday since medieval times; and (possibly related), one in every four of its buildings is or has been an inn or brewery. It's not a bit surprising that illustrious visitors in its past have included Bonnie Prince Charlie and Charles I, although they probably didn’t have time to stop off for a game of footie… Add to your list Ashbourne Heights (formerly known as Highfields Park), three miles from town, well placed to reach a range of market towns like Bakewell and Buxton, and with a good range of facilities and services to fire the family up. From the site you can reach the main sights, activities, landscapes and history of the Peak District: too many to go into here, but do bring your camera. Ashbourne Heights has a heated indoor pool, and generously-sized pitches with room for awnings, gazebos and a car parked alongside. Other facilities at the park include a licensed shop, picnic area, launderette, covered washing-up areas, showers, toilets and a baby changing area. All in all, a pretty good Peak District pitstop…

What customers say

Great spot with direct Tissington Trail access. Friendly staff, clean amenities, and spacious pitches are a hit. Pool and playground ace for families. Some toilets a bit old, a bit of noise/tidiness noted. Pods/bell tents are comfy and kitted out.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Relaxing, peaceful location with some great views. Well laid out site with the camping pitches right near the site entrance. Good size pitches. Large play area for the kids and a swimming pool you can book a session in. Staff were friendly and helpful. Shower/toilet block was clean and located close to tent pitches
One of our group had one of the pods next to the camping area and was very satisfied with it, fitted with double bed and bunk beds, plenty of power sockets fitted with USB chargers

Disliked Nothing to dislike

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Nice clean site, well spaced pitches. Swimming pool was excellent.

Disliked No Elsan disposal point near to the touring pitches, so had to use the van to drive round to empty. Not very well signposted on arrival, and for directions to reception to book in. Shame no Wi-fi for tourers.

Camping pod

Liked Fantastic location! Direct access to the Tissington trail. Clean, tidy and well organised site. A bit more structured than I like in a campsite but the pods were great and gave us a bit more space than we're used to. Ensuite private toilet and shower were a big bonus. A warm welcome at check in too even though it was after hours.

Disliked Hard beds. Took a sleeping bag and slept on the duvet provided.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely location. Good size pitch. Helpful staff in Reception. Nice toilet/shower facilities that were kept spotless and in full working order. We were on pitch 1 which was a lovely quiet spot. Easy access to the Tissington Trail right next to the site and good access to nearby Ashbourne and Dovedale. Burger van on site if you can't be bothered to cook, doing food throughout the day. Pitch was fairly flat. Whole site was kept clean and tidy. Not a lot of light pollution so was great for looking at the stars on a clear night,

Disliked The site has a indoor swimming pool, however, it is only open from 10am - 3pm each day and you have to pre-book a slot. Unfortunately this meant that we didn't get to use it, as we were out walking at those times. Would have been nice if it was open in the evenings, so it would be able to use it after being out all day. Also, the site appears to be on the flight path for a nearby airport, so you did get a lot of noise from aeroplanes. This is the first time where we'd been to a campsite that didn't provide wifi for the whole site, which was a bit disappointing.

Camping pod

Liked Fabulous clean well kept Park, friendly staff, easy booking in process, the place is in a Amazing place, one thing needs highlighting the ensuite pod's are not ensuite, you have your own shower and toilet but you have to come out of the pod and walk round the back to a separate unit, didn't bother me but maybe others.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park. You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
