General

  • Spacious site in the Bedfordshire countryside, just off the A1
  • A mile and a half from Sandy; Bedford 20 minutes' drive
  • Three miles from Shuttleworth's aerial displays

Captivated by all things canvas? Besotted with bivouacking? Then you'll be in good company at People Love Camping, a superbly spacious site in the Bedfordshire countryside just off the A1.

With flat and level pitches, a toilet block, showers and footpaths, there's all you need here to experience the simple pleasures of time spent outdoors. And should the charms of that slower pace of life start to wear off? Shuttleworth's air museum (three miles away) hosts regular aerial displays that can supply an extra dose of excitement.

This farm site produces fresh eggs and other goodies that are available to buy daily throughout the summer months. For more elaborate provisions, you'll need to look a little (but not much) further afield to Bridge Farm Shop, three quarters of a mile away on the river Ivel, or to the supermarkets, pubs and cafés that line the streets of Sandy (a mile and a half from base).

Please note

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

This park has no on-site shower facilities.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Please respect other guests and take all of your recyclable rubbish home with you.

Lovely site and a very friendly owner. She gave a quick overview of the site and of the surrounding area.

The site is quiet and has everything you need. The high hedge along the side of the site seems to give shelter all day during the height of summer. A huge bonus!

Lovely walks around and beautiful lavender fields. Beeston and Sandy are very close and there are lovely nature reserves to explore.

I stayed for one night for its easy access to the train station as I was travelling into London. It's a half hour walk to the station so I can see myself doing this more often once I'm back to working in the office part time.

    Disliked:

I did have a little trouble finding the field and had to ask for directions. But that was the nature of the site being secluded. A plus if anything.

Only other thing is that the door to the washblock is difficult to lock. Wasn't a problem as I was the only visitor as it was midweek but a new bolt might spare some embarrassment...

This was a brand new site and a lovely wild meadow for camping. We had a very peaceful stay and location is great with RSPB Sandy and other nice walks and cycle routes close by. Lovely to have the chickens on site and also stables adjacent.

Only one toilet, not working shower, no access to play ground

From the manager...

Due to the problem delaying the toilet/shower block we have removed the majority of the site’s future availability until everything is finished. We’ve left restricted availability on days that already had bookings.

I realise having a climbing frame in plain sight in the next field isn’t ideal when you have children, but a closer look would have shown you that some of the struts are broken, and the whole thing wobbles in the wind. It has moved house twice in the last few years, and isn’t properly tethered to the ground. I get nervous enough if my own children play on it, but I’m definitely not willing to risk any visitors‘ children getting hurt. The climbing frame is not listed as part of the campsite.

Local attractions

Shuttleworth (five minutes' drive), with its several annual air shows, is the obvious must-see attraction nearby, but the surrounding area has a lot more to offer. RSPB The Lodge (10 minutes) will be a draw for all birdwatchers, while historic sites like Moggerhanger House (five minutes), Willington Dovecote (10 minutes) and the Wimpole Estate (25 minutes) are all intriguing inroads into this part of England's past.

Up next, some sport – perhaps beginning at the John O'Gaunt Golf Club (10 minutes), where the greens are well-maintained and the views smashing. Sandy Sports Centre (five minutes) is also close for when you fancy a trip to the gym or to a floodlit all-weather pitch, with the nearest public swimming pools available in either St Neots (15 minutes) or Bedford (20 minutes). Finally, there's Bedford Microlight Centre (five minutes' drive or a 20-minute walk) if you'd like to learn how to fly under expert supervision.

And to round it all off? It's very much up to you, but popular options include a city sightseeing trip aboard a punt in Cambridge (40 minutes), taking off to the top-notch rides on offer at Gulliver's Land Theme Park (30 minutes) or investigating the wartime past at Bletchley Park (40 minutes).
