  • Off-grid Arizona campground 35 minutes' drive from the Grand Canyon
  • A 40-minute drive to Williams and an hour to Flagstaff
  • Bottled water and firewood available; campfires and dogs allowed
Take yourself truly off the grid at a primitive site in Arizona's wilderness… no electric, no tap water, this is boondocking at its best. Pull yourself off the highway of Route 66 and pick a plot at Little Heaven Ranch, where the quiet hours between 10pm and 6am mean you can fully wrap yourself in the Dark Sky Community. Pick out constellations and stars from the blanket-blue skies at night or stock up on your snoozing time to surmount the Grand Canyon National Park, 35 minutes’ drive away. Within 40 minutes’ drive of Williams too, this campground is in prime position to tackle the spiraling river valley and then re-enter civilisation when you’re ready. 6,080 feet above sea level, the campground has access to some mobile carriers so you can scratch up a plan of action for your ventures into the nearby metropolises or deeper trails into nature – there are mountain peaks, zip lines, and wildlife parks within reach. Don’t worry too much about staying hydrated, as the campground has cases of drinking water and loose water bottles – plus, you can stock up on potable water and food for fuel from the Grand Canyon dumpsite and Valle, 10 minutes’ drive away. There’s also non-potable water and garbage service on park, to keep the peaceful environment in tip-top shape. And for a true campfire in the wilderness, purchase firewood on park too. This is a true back to basics campground, no frills and away from the rumpus of the city, with a majestic landscape for every type of viewing pleasure. There's no problem bringing a dog along either – just be aware there are predators in the area and keep them on a leash.

Local attractions

River valleys don’t get much grander than the Grand Canyon (35 minutes’ drive). You could take the ‘premier’ mountainous rim-to-river Bright Angel Trail, lined with rest houses, or the softer option of the Grand Canyon railway right to the South Rim. Pics or it didn’t happen... test out the best photography cliff-ledge spots on your route. If your legs aren’t jelly yet, aim for the summit at Humphreys Peak (an hour and a half). It’s a steep climb… but as the highest point in Arizona, the views over craggy terrain and billowing sands stretch for miles. Swap nature for the big city in Flagstaff (an hour) and Williams (40 minutes), a worthy stop on the historic Route 66, with diners straight out of the 1900s. If you dare, take a whizz down the Route 66 Zipline in Williams, suitable for kids too, or peer through your window panes at the bears, big cats, and bison at the drive-through Bearizona Wildlife Park (40 minutes).

Primitive grass and sand tent campsite

Liked: Friendly service

Disliked: We were given a bucket as a toilet. Primitive is one thing, but charging $30 a night for no amenities, not Even a toilet, is a rip off. You can do that for free at BLM or national park land closer to the park.

From the manager: Thank you for choosing to stay with us, we know you had a choice. We appreciate your stays donation since it helps to fund future children's stays with us. You selected our primitive camp site. We aplogize you felt you were scammed. In our contacts you had never mentioned that there was no value perceived. As we discussed, the local area had experienced a severe wind storm which destroyed our Loo Shack. Therefore, I provided you with a personal Luggable Loo bucket as a courtesy, so you did not have to hike to where the replacement porta potties were dropped off that very evening. I am not sure how our location ranked 2/10, as you picked us. I aplogize, we were not closer to whatever it was you wanted us to be closer to. Our listing clearly states the travel time to both the Canyon and Williams. You are correct you could have camped closer to the park and gotten the same amenities as our primitive campsite. As BLM sites are first come first serve. There would be no guarantee for you to secure one at 8:30pm to set up your equipment in the dark. The value of making the donation to reserve a spot is so you could come to set up anytime. I did place you in a much desired spot with vehicle access rather than our true primitive sites that have a 3-5 min walk to the site. Additionally, I am not sure what accommodation you ranked as a 2/10? As it was a primitive tent site, so you needed to bring your own equipment. If you were unhappy with the equipment you brought that would be an issue to address with your equipment vendor. You also ranked us 2/10 on value. I apologize you were unhappy, however you never reached out to let us know. Our customer service was rated by you as 8/10. You never afforded me an opportunity to assist you with something under my control or to explain the value of your primitive camping spot. You were not charged for your additional tent, additional guests, or additional vehicle. Your reservation was for one tent, two people and one vehicle. We are not ones to nickel and dime. While you stayed with us for two days, there was never expressed a Dr lack of satisfaction, nor did you indicate the desire to pack up and move to BLM land closer to the park out of our secure and monitored property. I would have been happy to assist you in anyway possible given the opportunity. We wish you Happy and safe travels in the future.
