  • Peaceful pet-friendly RV resort on the banks of the Chena River
  • Central Fairbanks and international airport within a 10-minute drive
  • Riverside restaurant, picnic area and tour booking at the park
If you’re on the lookout for a peaceful riverside spot while travelling around Alaska, you may well find your eye being caught by a name like River’s Edge Resort RV Park. And a fine choice that would be too, as this park on the outskirts of Fairbanks is in a super spot for both rural relaxation and city amenities. The river in question is the Chena River – but there’s more to the park than just the flowing water. It’s also a place packed with trees and flowers, with plenty of space to sit back and take in your surroundings (for many hours if you’re here in summer, as this is a part of the world that gets treated to the midnight sun…) Being able to head into the city centre with a drive of 10 minutes is certainly a handy thing for cultural days out, restaurants and the like; even closer is a supermarket a couple of minutes away for stocking up on food for your barbecue dinners or meals at the park’s riverside picnic area. And even closer than that is the resort’s own grill restaurant, which serves up breakfasts, lunches, dinners and drinks overlooking the river. Life at this resort is pretty easy, with well-equipped sites and access to handy facilities including free wifi, a coin-operated laundry, a dump station, a car/RV wash facility and restrooms with free showers. Resort staff can even sort you out with tickets and transport to local attractions to save you the hassle of unhooking ahead of your days out.

Local attractions

To Fairbanks (10 minutes’ drive) first, for days out at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, Morris Thompson Cultural & Visitors Center, and Pioneer Air Museum, and to step back to Gold Rush days with a visit to the Pioneer Museum & Big Stampede Show. If you’ve brought the kids, take a look at Fairbanks Children's Museum, admire the stunning ice sculptures at the Ice Museum and seeing steam trains in action at the Tanana Valley Railroad Museum. And then… out into the incredible Alaskan landscape for such things as river cruises, fishing, rafting, dog sledding, canoe paddling, ATV driving, hikes and flightseeing, all of which can be sorted in town or at the park. Running Reindeer Ranch, Alaska Songbird Institute and the Large Animal Research Station are all within a 15-minute drive if you’d like to get friendly with some local wildlife. Need to relax after all that? Take a soak in the warm, mineral-packed waters at Chena Hot Springs (an hour and 20 minutes’ drive), and see if you can get the tiddlers on best behaviour with a stop to meet the main man at Santa Claus House (25 minutes).
