    Local attractions

Local city Bartlesville is famed for the work of architect Frank Lloyd Wright who designed the Price Tower skyscraper, now home to a contemporary art gallery. Another famed former resident is Frank Phillips, founder of the Phillips Petroleum Company here back in 1905; his house is now a museum managed by the Oklahoma Historical Society. Phillips also had a ranch 10 miles out of town that these days makes up the 3,700-acre Woolaroc working ranch and museum (20 minutes' drive), with collections of western fine and Native American art, Colt pistols and the Woolaroc aircraft that won the disastrous Dole Air Race in 1927. A huge wildlife reserve at the ranch is home to over 20 species including bison, zebra, water buffalo and elk. Some pioneer history can be seen at Woolaroc, but for a fuller look make for the Prairie Song pioneer village in nearby Dewey (10 minutes), set up as a frontier prairie town. A saloon, schoolhouse, train depot, saddle shop and trading post are all here to explore among the 25 or so hand-hewn log buildings, set against views of Texas Longhorn cattle grazing on the prairie beyond. The Joseph H Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve is 55 minutes away.
