  • Quiet campsite in a rural area close to the source of the Asón river
  • Surrounded by caves; within an hour's drive of Santander and Bilbao
  • On-site café and restaurant for meals and snacks
Located in the peaceful area of Ramales de la Victoria, close to the border between Cantabria and the Basque Country, Camping Ramales is a pleasant spot set over three hectares with well-maintained amenities and easy access to the surrounding countryside. Half of this green and rural site is made up of native woodland, with chestnut, hazel, oak and beech trees, so there are plenty of peaceful shaded areas and lots of wildlife waiting to be explored. As you emerge from the trees, you'll be treated to spectacular mountain views, while a few metres away there is also the river Asón, where local kids head to paddle in the summer. With scenery like this, you'll have plenty of choice when it comes to finding a picnic spot… Carrying on along the river bank, you can either head to the source of the Asón river or stroll into the centre of Ramales de la Victoria, an attractive little town with lots of grand colonial-era houses, several well-reviewed restaurants and a handful of food shops and supermarkets if you need to stock up on essential supplies. You can also stick around on site to eat, though, as Camping Ramales has a café and restaurant for drinks and snacks closer to home.

Power optional grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Really friendly welcome with member of staff who spoke good English. Toilets were clean. Amazing views and peaceful environment. Great restaurant. We had a very pleasant stay!

Disliked: Just a little suggestion - toilet block lights hard to find at night time, but apart from that we can’t complain at all!

Power optional grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Everything - except the weather. Excellent site with very clean facilities, superb staff and level pitches. The very comfortable Clubhouse is such a bonus with a wood burning stove (perfect for the weather we experienced), necessary provisions, cafe and restaurant with great food. The cleanliness of the facilities was impeccable.

Power optional grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Near Santander and its ferry. Helpful manager and staff. Clean toilet and shower areas all checked during the day. Lovely bar and restaurant area - we had a meal on one evening and it was good. The bar area and lounge is a perfect place to relax on a rainy evening. The mountain scenery nearby was spectacular.

Disliked: There was a slight step up to the toilets and showers from the adjacent floor area - I stumbled on the way out and was lucky to not injure myself on the wash basin counter top (stone). My wife made the same comment from the ladies section. I think the difference in levels should be highlighted with warning signs or warning tape on the step. I would give 5 stars except for this.

Power optional grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: I picked this site as it was dog friendly and the closest I could find to Santander, which was my destination for my return ferry the next day. The site is only a 45 minutes drive away making the journey to the ferry port less stressful. This site is AMAZING. The staff are so friendly and helpful, the scenery and setting is stunning with a beautiful river for your dog to cool off in after the drive and great shower facilities. Both the bar area and also the restaurant are split into two halves, one half dog friendly and the other half for campers without dogs if they prefer. The terrace with wonderful mountain views is 100% dog friendly. Now for the menu - WOW WOW WOW. A lot of the dishes are made from locally sourced Basque country ingredients. I had meatballs from cows only reared is a local hamlet and boy were they good. Great wine list too. Well done to the team of staff - keeping doing what you are doing as its great so thank you. I will be definitely be back!!!! One word sums it up SUPERB

Power optional grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Friendly and helpful manager and staff who were always on hand if needed. We couldn’t speak Spanish and they were all very kind to us. The campsite was well run . The toilet and shower areas were kept clean throughout the day. The canopy of trees kept the pitches cool and shady. Having a large restaurant and reception area was a bonus and a welcoming feature especially when it rained. Bar open 9am -10pm with drinks & snacks. Great views from the restaurant balcony. The nearby town of Remales had everything we needed. The area had stunning mountain scenery. Only 30 mins from beach in Laredo. Spectacular drive up into the mountains to see the waterfall and source of the local river Ason . Interesting visit to a prehistoric cave .

Local attractions

The landscape surrounding Ramales de la Victoria is dotted with mountains and caves. Take a hike up to the top of the Pico del Carlista mountain (20 minutes' drive) and visit the spectacular Pozalagua caves or stick to the caverns and viewpoints around town like the Covalanas caves (10 minutes), where you can explore prehistoric cave paintings on guided tours. The local area is also known for its adventurous side, with potholing, climbing, canoeing and via ferrata high ropes trails all on offer close by (ask your hosts for more details). Other less adrenaline-fuelled attractions can also be found in the surrounding countryside, though, with popular choices including the lovely Santuario de la Bien Aparecida church (25 minutes) and BBK Karpin Fauna (20 minutes), an animal shelter. Camping Ramales also has the benefit of being close to northern Spain's big port cities like Santander (50 minutes) and Bilbao (an hour). The former is less of a tourist hotspot than the latter, although it's still worth making the trip for walks along the Paseo de Pereda with its gorgeous views over the Atlantic, or for lazy days on its several sandy beaches.
