- Pretty site in a quiet environment surrounded by mountains and trees
- Inside a stunning geological park and a 10-minute walk to Aliaga town
- Restaurant-bar serving tapas; tours available around the area
As if being midway between the Maestrazgo mountains and the scenic mining basins of Teruel province wasn’t enough, Camping Aliaga is also splendidly set inside the Aliaga Geological Park, a striking spot made up of eye-catching rock formations and lush green juniper forests.
The look of the landscape surrounding this serene site is summed up by the translation of ‘Aliaga’ (from the Arabic ‘Alulgha’ meaning ‘twisting valley’) – making it a stunning spot to hike by day towards places like the La Tamborera waterfall with its pretty pool, around 20 minutes away on foot.
Before tying up your hiking boots and taking off on a trek towards cascades splashing against contrasting-colour rocks, though, order coffee at the restaurant-bar on site and look forward to returning in the evening to chill out with a bottle of beer. Route and tour info is available at the park to ponder over as you sip, with excursions up to the crest of a mountain overlooking the Hoz Mala ravine organised (and a chance to spot vultures while you’re there).
Capture the flying creatures on camera, then return to base and upload the shots to your social media accounts using the site wifi; if there’s enough life left in your legs for a short amble afterwards, the village of Aliaga, with a supermarket for stocking up on supplies, is a 10-minute walk away.
The park also has modern toilets with hot water, a laundry area and safes to help secure your belongings. Pets are permitted too, and there are facilities accessible for people with disabilities.

Local attractions
The village of Aliaga has a rich heritage – check out the history by visiting the 13th-century castle with its 12 circular towers, the well-preserved multi-arch medieval bridge and the baroque-style Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Zarza. The handsome city hall market and the parish church of San Juan Bautista deserve your attention as well.
Once you’ve investigated the historical sights nearby, turn your attention to the gem of a geological park in the surrounds with nine tourist hotspots to take in. Kick off your tour at the Alto de Camarillas viewing point 400 metres out of town for epic vistas, then potter over to La Porra and glimpse a rock formation covered in mollusc fossils from when the whole region was underwater several millennia ago.
After a look at the snake-like twisted cretaceous limestone layers of La Olla, cap it all off by investigating the industrial past of the region at the coal seams mined between 1940 and 1964, which can be seen on the way to Aldehuela.
