Set almost halfway between historic Granada and Costa Tropical beaches, and not much further from the mountains of the Alpujarras and Sierra Nevada, Granada Base Camp has a spectacular setting indeed. Set high on a hillside, the site has far-reaching all-round views and easy access to all manner of alfresco adventures.
Everything is well thought out to ensure your stay is comfortable and relaxed. The facilities are there for you to enjoy without worries, from the extra-large gravel pitches to a spotless shower block (with hot water available all day) and a handy laundry area with washing machines and dryers.
Barbecues are permitted on site (buy provisions in the big supermarket at Dúrcal (five minutes’ walk), but otherwise you can tuck into breakfast, burgers and tapas sharing plates at the on-site restaurant. It’s open every day apart from Tuesday, and has spectacular views of the sunset from its terrace.
You also have the use of a swimming pool and sun deck, plus a social club for relaxing and socialising, playing board games or rereading your favourite book. There are also toys for younger kids to play with, so the whole family will feel at home. Any questions you may have about local sightseeing can be answered by the friendly team at reception, who will organise bike hire too.

Local attractions
Sightseeing trips might start in gorgeous Granada (half an hour’s drive), where you’ll need to book ahead to explore the vast and stunning complex of the Alhambra, with its gardens, fortress and palaces. The city’s district of Sacromonte is also worth visiting for its troglodyte cave dwellings, flamenco clubs and views back to the hilltop landmarks of the Alhambra.
Turning south, you can be on the Med coast in about 40 minutes by car. Costa Tropical beaches include grey-pebble Playa de Granada on the Motril coastal strip, which is backed by an elegant promenade and seafood restaurants. The kids will enjoy foraging for shells on grey-sand Playa de las Azucenas, while a little further east is Playa Torrrenueva, where you can hire boats and try your hand at various watersports.
If you’re up for exploring this scenic corner of Andalusia on foot or by bike, head for the networks of craggy mountain trails in the Falla de Nigüelas nature reserve (10 minutes). Further afield, you have more testing hikes and mountain bike tracks in the Alpujarras foothills (an hour), and if you are staying at Granada Base Camp in winter, there's skiing in the Sierra Nevada National Park (an hour and 10 minutes).
