Local attractions
A stay at Maru Djembe really is all about the wildlife. The site sits next to several game reserves where you can see Big Five animals (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) and close to the Phalaborwa (45 minutes’ drive) and Park Orpen (an hour) gates in the famous Kruger National Park, for guided safari tours, evening game drives and horseback treks through the bush.
At the foot of the North Eastern Lowveld Drakensberg mountains, Moholoholo Animal Rehabilitation Centre (35 minutes) gives guests the chance to interact with elephants, wildebeest and jackals. Or for an animal-feeding encounter with a real difference, meet the hippo hand-raised by humans at Jessica Hippo (half an hour).
Want to see the bush from above? Take an early-morning balloon safari (half an hour) to soar over the bush at sunrise, or keep your eyes peeled for the Big Five as you float over the game reserves (and don’t forget the camera). For another perspective on the wild untamed landscapes of the Limpopo region, take a boat from the jetty at Blyde Dam (45 minutes) and cruise down the river canyon lined by soaring cliffs.
