- Peaceful motorhome pitches on a São João das Lampas smallholding
- Samarra Beach five minutes’ drive and Sintra palaces half an hour
- Rural views; shops, bars and restaurants five minutes’ drive
Looking for a Portugal motorhome stop without the crowds? And one that’s convenient for Lisbon too? Your search is over. Sítio da Luz, on the outskirts of the coastal village of São João das Lampas, has both those attributes. For starters, the site is private, small and quiet, with electric hook-ups and drinking water available for a handful of grass pitches set on the fields of a smallholding.
And yes, you’re surrounded by unspoilt nature and countryside views, but you’re within easy access of the exotic palaces at Sintra (half an hour’s drive) and all the attractions of Lisbon (50 minutes). That means you can spend your days sightseeing and at night retreat to your rural hideaway to relish the peace.
For times when urban exploration is not for you, the site is five minutes by car from a secluded Atlantic beach tucked into the tiny cove at Samarra – you may well have the place to yourselves. If you need to restock supplies, there’s a supermarket in São João das Lampas, as well as a couple of local bars and restaurants.

Local attractions
You have a choice of Atlantic beaches for days soaking up the sun. Samarra Beach (five minutes’ drive) is often nearly deserted, while just to the north and also uncrowded, Praia da Vigia (10 minutes’ drive) is a long sweep of soft sand reached by a winding cliff path.
You can also discover this quiet corner of Portugal on hiking and biking trails; one leads to the ancient Ponte Romana de Catribana (15 minutes’ walk). If you’d like to find out more about the Roman legacy in the area, head for the Museu Arqueológico de São Miguel de Odrinhas (10 minutes’ drive), displaying artifacts unearthed locally.
Sintra (half an hour) is a hilltop town renowned for its splendid castles and palaces in a variety of architectural styles from Moorish to medieval and Neo-Gothic. Visit Lisbon (55 minutes), and you can tour bucket-list attractions like Belém Tower on the Tagus riverside, the Castelo de São Jorge overlooking the city and atmospheric cobbled streets lined with fado bars in the Alfama district.
