- Off-grid site five minutes’ drive from Avô and its river beach
- Half an hour’s drive from the edge of the Serra da Estrela Nature Park
- Family-run and a 40-minute walk from coffee shops and a restaurant
Those who check in at Quinta das Colinas should be very pleased with the pretty part of Portugal they have at their fingertips. This Coimbra site is in a green, hilly area dotted with typical schist villages, known for their recognisable stone houses and paddle-worthy river beaches.
A prime example of this is the village of Avô, just a 40-minute walk or a five-minute drive from the site. Schedule a few hours of downtime on its spectacular riverside beach on the Alva, followed by a little stroll to the village's restaurant for a traditional Portuguese lunch or one of the coffee shops for your daily caffeinated beverage.
Quinta das Colinas is a quiet, off-grid and family-run site with stunning sunsets and faraway views. Suited to families, it’s the sort of spot where guests can gather fresh eggs in the morning and pick their own veg for dinner.
An outdoor kitchen is on hand if you fancy having a go at cooking your own evening meals. Otherwise, you’re welcome to let the family treat you to some woodfired pizza fresh from the pizza oven. Hammocks are strewn around the site so that guests can always find a cosy corner to read a good book. There’s also a treehouse and a trampoline where kids can keep themselves busy.
When you’re ready to get out and about, there are plenty of scenic walks in the area surrounding the site, plus many more in the Serra da Estrela Nature Park, which is half an hour’s drive away. You may want to take a little drive to Coja, 20 minutes away, for a coffee in a traditional village or ask the family for tips on visiting some of the local markets.

Local attractions
From Quinta das Colinas, you’re able to walk right to the nearest schist village, Avô. Others are only a short drive away. Perhaps start by making your way to Benfeita (25 minutes), where there’s another spectacular river beach (there's plenty of these around…).
Scenic Coja (20 minutes) has another nice river beach if you’re craving another paddle – this time followed by a visit to a tapas bar along the riverfront.
If you're quite the fan of waterfalls, there is a family-friendly series of waterfalls just outside of Benfeita, Fraga da Pena (half an hour); a paved walkway runs alongside them. The site is also half an hour’s drive away from the edge of the Serra da Estrela Nature Park, where some of the closest attractions are the Poço da Broca do Muro / Poço Fundeiro (35 minutes) and Poço da Broca da Barriosa (35 minutes) waterfalls. The latter has a large pool where locals like to go wild swimming.
