A motorhome gives you freedom, doesn’t it? So many places you can stop at for a short (or long) break, and it doesn’t matter if they have facilities or not, because you’ve got your own little mobile palace with you. So… assuming your motorhome comes with its own toilet and shower, Campersite Malhadinhas (which has neither) is an excellent spot for a Portuguese holiday.
This family-friendly site has level motorhome pitches halfway between Odemira to the south-east and Sines to the north-west (about half an hour’s drive to either), in the Alentejo region, which is renowned for its wine production. Make sure you have plenty of room in your camper for a few bottles to take home.
The site is conveniently close to the coast: the sandy beach at Malhão – backed by vegetation-covered cliffs and dunes, and battered by Atlantic waves (hence a top spot for surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing) – is a 10-minute drive away; Praia do Brejo Largo a little farther to the south (20 minutes). Also 10 minutes away is the town of Vila Nova de Milfontes, where you can source all you need for the barbecue (there are picnic benches on the property for alfresco dinners) or find a restaurant in which to sample the local cuisine.
When it’s time to walk the family dog, there are plenty of hilly and coastal trails in the area, including Rocha de Água d’Alto (15 minutes), where a forested trail leads to a waterfall; and the splendid Fishermen’s Trail (20 minutes).

- There are no garbage cans onsite: all garbage will need to be taken home with you.
- There is no reception building on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.
- Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.
- The charging of electric vehicles is not permitted on site.

Local attractions
Lose yourself in the old historic centre of Sines (half an hour’s drive), with its whitewashed fishermen’s cottages and narrow alleyways, using the ruins of the medieval castle as a point of reference. Just under one of the castle towers is a statue of the navigator and explorer Vasco da Gama, who was born here.
The South West Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park (40 minutes) runs all the way to the Algarve region and features spectacular coastal landscapes with vertiginous cliffs and wind-eroded rock formations. You can spot white storks and fishing eagles here, plus the rare maritime otter.
There are more than 100 animal species at Zoo de Lagos (an hour and a half), including kangaroos and capybaras. In addition to feeding sessions (lemurs, otters and penguins among others), the zoo has a Flight Tunnel, from where you can watch the colourful winged residents as they take to the air.
