- Family site on the Waitangi River, a 10-minute drive from Paihia
- Waitangi Treaty Grounds 10 minutes’ drive; Puketi Forest half an hour
- On-site pick-up for tours and cruises; pool and playground; pizza oven
Sitting on the banks of the Waitangi River, family-friendly Bay of Islands Holiday Park draws guests with spectacular scenery and a peaceful environment, not to mention its proximity to the island-dotted bay after which it is named.
The town of Paihia is a 10-minute drive away, and from there you can embark on a cruise of the area. Better still, the folks at the site can book any number of excursions for you, and (how’s this for service?) you’ll get picked up right at the gate.
Among the tours on offer are cruises of the bay and day trips to Ninety Mile Beach (two hours and 20 minutes’ drive) and Cape Reinga, at the north-western tip of North Island (two and a half hours), plus activities like swimming with dolphins and chartering a yacht.
After you’ve done all that, if you feel like you need to recharge your batteries, the site is a top spot for unwinding, with an open-air pool and wild swimming in the river. Meanwhile, the kids can tire themselves out in the playground (with swings and climbing structures) or by challenging new friends to a game of badminton or volleyball. There’s also a dog park where you can exercise your four-legged companion as long as they are kept on a lead.
The barbecue area also includes a woodfired pizza oven, so you can make your own pie and devour it at the picnic tables shaded by the large sails. Large amenities blocks with non-metered showers (and facilities for disabled guests) and a launderette complete the picture.

Local attractions
As well as being the starting point for cruises of the bay, the wharf at Paihia is where you can catch a ferry across Kororareka Bay to the pretty Victorian town of Russell. Check out the Pompallier Mission and Printery for local history exhibits, then take a hike up Flagstaff Hill to take in far-reaching views of the bay.
One of New Zealand’s most historic sites, Waitangi Treaty Grounds (10 minutes’ drive) is where both the country’s declaration of independence and its founding document were signed in the 19th century. Today two museums explore the significance of these events, and there are also Maori cultural performances.
Paths within the lush Puketi Forest (half an hour) include the Kauri Walk, snaking through a grove of these giant trees, and the Puketi Nature Trail, along which you might be able to catch a spectacular display of glow-worms after dark.
