  • Peaceful dog-friendly wooded site on the outskirts of Utrecht
  • A 20-minute drive to the city centre; 35 minutes to Loosdrecht Lakes
  • Heated outdoor swimming pool, café and playground
You'll likely feel pretty well tucked away among the soaring pines at Bos Park Bilthoven… At this site in a nature reserve in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, on the outskirts of Utrecht, you might feel like you’ve stumbled upon a peaceful pocket of wildlife in the city. Here, the landscape of drifting sand and thick forestry is already a hideout for rabbits, woodpeckers and squirrels. So, pick a spot among the shaded or open patches and join the squad, within cycling and walking distance (or a 20-minute drive) from the city centre and 25 minutes from Amersfoort’s cultural centre. This family-friendly wooded site is well-prepared for energetic kids too. Along with the walking and cycling routes around the surrounding area, there’s also a paddling pool and heated outdoor swimming pool on site (solar panels make the pool nicely eco-friendly). And don't forget the bouncy castle and outdoor playground where kids can blow off extra steam. If you have a more laidback afternoon in mind, you could unwind on the terrace with a drink from the on-site café, which overlooks the pool. There’s also a dune with a cable car on site for some splendid views. As you might expect on the outskirts of a city, there's no shortage of restaurants, bars and shops within a five-minute cycle to ensure that your stomach is always attended to (hire bikes on site if you've not brought them). The nearest train station is five minutes’ drive too, or there's a well-linked station in the city centre to take you further out. If you’d prefer to walk around, that's no problem – and you can set out with your four-legged friend too, as dogs are welcome on site (a maximum of two pets at a time).

Local attractions

Don’t limit yourself to just the rumble of the city. Over at Loosdrecht Lakes (35 minutes’ drive), you can try out paddleboarding, wakeboarding or sailing. There are also crescent-shaped sandy beaches tucked away at Het strand van Henschotermeer (20 minutes), a family-friendly lake with shallow waters and picnic-ready shores. In Amersfoort, there are several historical landmarks. Enter into the inner city through the medieval gates of Koppelpoort (25 minutes), a pretty imposing castle. If you fancy a trip to the zoo, there’s also DierenPark Amersfoort (20 minutes), which hoards a collection of cute (or rather wild) animals. In the vicinity of Utrecht, you can learn about the armed forces at Nationaal Militair Museum (15 minutes or 20 minutes’ cycle). Afterwards, take a tour of the Monument Pyramide van Austerlitz (20 minutes), a towering pyramid, or perhaps visit the fairytale-like grounds at the huge Castle De Haar (35 minutes).
