  • Peaceful family-friendly site with shaded pitches
  • A 10-minute drive from Mariental; 15 minutes from Hardap National Park
  • Horse riding, birdwatching and hiking available
There’s a saying round these parts: “You cry twice in Namibia. First when you arrive and then again when you have to leave.” And if that doesn’t make you want to hasten towards hols hereabouts, nothing will. Sufficiently enticed? Make tracks for Koha Guesthouse, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive (seven kilometres) from the small Hardap Region town of Mariental. Those who need more encouraging might be lured by the name itself. In the Nama language, Koha means ‘come and have a look’, and there’s plenty to look at (and do) round here. The site’s on a rural plot, where guests are free to get hands on with pruning or harvesting grapes, helping to train Arabian horses, or whatever else is happening on the farm during stays. If spending hols doing manual labour doesn’t appeal, opt instead for signing up to one of the activities the site team can organise: clamber into the saddle for horse riding experiences on Arabian Studs, keep camera in hand on birdwatching trips, or take hikes through the crop fields to the Fish River. The site’s within about 40 minutes of the edge of the Kalahari desert, but there’s lots of greenery nearby – that’s thanks to Hardap Dam, 20 minutes away, which is the largest water reservoir in Namibia. Head here for fishing, watersports and hikes around Hardap National Park (15 minutes), or take advantage of its proximity to spend days lounging about in the shade beneath the trees on site.

Local attractions

The site’s well placed for easy access to the rest of the country. It’s roughly midway between the cities of Keetmanshoop and Windhoek (two hours 10 minutes’ drive to the former, and two hours 40 minutes to the latter); a station serving the TransNamib trainline, which connects the two, is 10 minutes from base in Mariental. There’s more to Mariental than just the station, too: a handful of restaurants should see guests well-fed, shops will keep fridges well-stocked for barbecue nights, and a local butcher is a must-visit for biltong and dry wors. Further afield, make the trip to Maltahöhe (an hour and five minutes) to visit Oahera Centre, which promotes the Nama culture and its tongue-click-filled language. Sign up for donkey cart rides and guided hikes at the centre, spend some time browsing in the African art shop, or sample local eats at the restaurant. Lucky enough to be travelling on even further, or happy to take longer drives? It’s two hours from base to the faux-medieval Duwisib Castle and the Neuras Wine and Wildlife Estate, and four hours to the Namib desert’s famed Sossuvlei and Deadvlei.
