- Modern desert campsite in the Kunene Region’s Upper Huab River Valley
- Twyfelfontein petroglyphs 25 minutes’ drive; Organ Pipes 20 minutes
- Pitches with barbecues and firepits; book elephant safaris on site
Set in the Kunene Region’s sandy Upper Huab River Valley, Twyfelfontein Elephant Campsite opened in January 2023. Set well away from the noise and dust of passing traffic, this is a magical spot where you can experience fiery red sunsets on clear evenings, a carpet of bright stars in cloudless night skies and the night-time silence of the desert – broken only by the sound of barking geckos.
With ample shaded areas so you can escape the heat of the day, the campsite has just a few pitches, each accommodating up to four vehicles to cater for individuals or groups travelling together. Each has a food-preparation slab, a sink, barbecue and firepit. Firewood and drinking water can be purchased from reception.
Pristine shower blocks – one per two pitches – have male and female toilets, showers and wash basins. Outside each one are sinks for washing any dusty clothes.
And if you fancy the chance to see the rare and elusive desert-adapted elephants of northern Namibia (and who wouldn’t), you can book three-hour four-wheel drive safaris when you check in to the campsite.

Local attractions
As if an elephant safari is not exciting enough, the campsite is only 25 minutes’ drive from the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Twyfelfontein (/Ui-//aes), where a series of around 2,000 petroglyphs – believed to be up to 6,000 years old and representing rhinos, elephants, ostriches and giraffes – are carved into sandstone boulders.
Close by is the 80 million-year-old Verbrandeberg (Burnt Mountain), layered with red, black and purple stratas of volcanic rock. Head even further back in time to see the basalt columns of the Organ Pipes (20 minutes’ drive), dating approximately from 150 millions years ago and formed by wind erosion. Older still (280 millions years) are the gigantic fossilised tree trunks scattered across the rocky desert floor at the Petrified Forest (half an hour).
To understand more about indigenous cultures in Namibia, visit the Damara Living Museum (15 minutes), where you can tour a village typical of the hunter-gatherer Damara people and join in with songs, dance and traditional games.
