  • Shaded pitches on a friendly tree-lined site in the town of Bar
  • Within 15 minutes’ walk of the beach and town centre
  • Snack bar and a small food shop on site; dogs welcome
Soon to set foot in Bar, a stunning town on the Montenegro coast? Settle in at Autocamp Susanj and it won't be long before you're strolling streets lined with cypress trees, bars and restaurant terraces or wading through the shallows of a beach lapped by the Adriatic Sea. This friendly little site is within 15 minutes’ walk of the town centre – and if that isn’t pleasing enough, it’s the same distance from the beach. Spend your mornings pottering around the old town, climbing to the Stari Bar ruins (over an hour’s walk or a 15-minute drive) or wandering past the medieval walls and 1885 King Nikola's Palace, now a museum with royal furniture and folk costumes (just 20 minutes’ walk away). Afternoons can be spent by the sea, either at the local beach or at other fine spots such as Topolica City Beach, 40 minutes’ walk away from the site. Evening plans? Make your way to the town’s restaurants and bars to sip rakija or feast on pizzas and seafood. There is a snack bar at Autocamp Susanj that sometimes hosts dance parties, as well as a little food shop stocking basic supplies. This is a very simple site, so the facilities are quite basic, but you will have access to simple showers and toilets, a garden and an outdoor dining area. Olive trees also provide shade over the pitches, which are dog-friendly. There are gorgeous views of the sea from the site, and the local area is splendid for taking little walks around the coast. The Port of Bar is 10 minutes’ drive away from the site.

Liked: Really friendly and helpful people who run the site, great location for beach and access to town. Reasonably priced and not too noisy considering it’s next to a road. Small shops and bakery a short walk away.

Disliked: Facilities basic in the extreme. No hot water available due to lack of solar to heat the water. A little bit scruffy but we were the first visitors of the season, so there’s time for that to improve.

Local attractions

After seeing the Stari Bar ruins five kilometres uphill from town, you may want to set your sights further afield. Handily, Bar is an excellent launchpad for visiting Lake Skadar National Park; Virpazar (half an hour’s drive) is a village at the edge of the national park. From there, boats glide out to visit Kom Monastery while passengers watch for wildlife like storks and herons. For more adventurous day trips, join a canyoning tour from Bar. If that seems a little too daring, there’s always the option to head north towards Sveti Stefan (35 minutes), where there are yet more Adriatic beaches as well as a fortified island with 15th-century stone buildings. Connected to the mainland by a tidal causeway, it overlooks a gorgeous pink-sand beach… Back in Bar, check out the Old Olive Tree (10 minutes), believed to be older than 2,000 years (despite one side being burnt by a few card players who accidentally threw a lit match onto the trunk, according to folklore).
