  • Motorhome pitches on a wetlands reserve a 10-minute drive from Caorle
  • Lignano Sabbiadoro 35 minutes’ drive; Venice an hour and a quarter
  • Horse riding, bike hire and breakfast service on site
Whether you’re after a relaxing holiday with plenty of beach time or a more active break (filled with activities such as hiking, birdwatching and horse riding), chances are you’ll find it at Area Camper Brussa Oasi. Throw in the fact that you’re within day-tripping distance from Venice (an hour and a quarter's drive), and you have all the ingredients for a pretty unforgettable time. Where exactly is this place, you might ask? Area Camper Brussa Oasi sits within the Oasi Vallevecchia di Brussa, a natural area of wetlands stretching between the seaside resorts of Caorle (10 minutes’ drive) and Bibione (half an hour), on the northern reaches of the Adriatic coastline. It's possible to explore this watery landscape (and spot resident birds like red herons and mallards) on foot, by bike (which you can hire on site) or by kayak. Arguably the most romantic way of experiencing the area, though, is on horseback – how fortunate, then, that the site has its own stables, with gentle animals that will take you on ambles through the fields and on to the pine forest and the sandy dunes at Brussa Beach, about four kilometres away. In addition to pitches with motorhome service points (including water and electric hook-ups), the site has a toilet block with facilities for disabled guests, showers and a washing-up area, plus a launderette and charging points for electric cars. There’s a bookable breakfast service, as well as a communal fridge where you can store your purchases from the on-site food shop or chill the beers from the artisanal brewery just up the road. Well-behaved dogs are welcome.

Local attractions

In the neighbouring region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lignano Sabbiadoro (35 minutes’ drive) is a seaside resort with several water and amusement parks, plus a long and well-equipped sandy beach. Walk along the shore all the way to the Faro Rosso, a red lighthouse at the end of a wooden boardwalk. Renowned for its sandy lido, Jesolo (45 minutes) is also home to the Military Historical Museum Vidotto, where visitors are allowed to climb up and inside tanks, helicopters and other military vehicles. There are also interesting collections of uniforms and weapons. If you spend only one day in Venice, don’t miss St Mark’s Square, with the multidomed St Mark’s Basilica, the spectacular Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Campanile, which you can climb for far-reaching views of the city and the lagoon. If you’re into Renaissance art, check out the Gallerie dell’Accademia; the Peggy Guggenheim Collection has a more modern focus, while Fondation Pinault displays contemporary works.
