- Quiet, leafy and family-friendly site bordering Lake Chiusi in Tuscany
- Montepulciano half an hour’s drive and Orvieto 45 minutes
- Restaurant and bar overlooking the lake; direct access to a bike path
If you’re looking to explore famed Tuscan towns like Montepulciano or Pienza, Area Sosta Camper Il Chiaro is a small, quiet and family-friendly base from which to do just that. A short stroll from Lake Chiusi and 10 minutes’ drive from the historic village of the same name, the site has partially shaded pitches set under pine trees.
All the essential amenities are available, namely coin-operated hot showers, washing-up sinks, a baby-changing room, water loading and electric hook-ups. In addition to all the practicalities, you can also cook up a feast on the communal barbecue, drink local red wine in the waterside bar and dine in the neighbouring fish restaurant.
There’s a dedicated play area and an outdoor gym, facilities for trout fishing and swimming on Lake Chiusi, and a choice of dog walks around the shoreline. The Sentiero della Bonifica pedestrian and bike path also runs right past the site, so no-one should be short of something to do. If you just fancy hanging out in one of the site’s strategically placed hammocks, keep an eye out for the waterfowl that frequent the grounds.

Local attractions
A 10-minute drive will take you through the Valdichiana countryside to gorgeous and now largely medieval Chiusi, with its museums and tangle of Etruscan-built catacombs. Other renowned Tuscan towns in the area include medieval Montepulciano (half an hour’s drive), surrounded by vineyards, and Pienza (45 minutes) with its spectacular views over the undulating landscape.
As well as day trips to Tuscan icons, the site is also well set for forays into fabulous Umbrian towns like Orvieto (45 minutes) and its stunning frescoed cathedral, or Perugia (55 minutes), with its medieval centre wrapped in a mantle of ramparts. Right on the border of both regions is Città della Pieve (25 minutes), well-worth a visit for its austere medieval architecture.
For a change from urban days out, you can go birdwatching, swimming and hiking in Lake Trasimeno Regional Park (25 minutes), and shake off any muscle aches in the therapeutic thermal waters of Chianciano (20 minutes).
