  • Quiet family-run Tuscany site on a farm outside San Guiliano Terme
  • A 10-minute drive to Pisa, 20 mins to Lucca and 25 mins to the coast
  • Hot tub, sauna and barbecue on area, plus farm animals to meet
If your plan for your Tuscany break involves lots of swanning around art galleries, ticking off historic monuments and sipping coffees in cute little cafés, but you’d also rather like a bit of time spent enjoying some fresh air and green scenery, you’ll have found a splendid base in Il Pruno. This family-run site is just outside the spa town of San Guiliano Terme, in a quiet tree-filled location that should fulfil the nature aspect of your wishlist. It’s also a mere 10 minutes’ drive (or 20 minutes’ bus ride) from the centre of Pisa, meaning you can pop into the city whenever you fancy it to see all those famed sights and feast on restaurant meals. As if those two things weren’t enough, you’ll also be within easy reach of more heritage in the city of Lucca and at various castles dotted around the countryside – and it’s not far to the coast for some beach time in Viareggio or Torre del Lago. Those of you lucky to be on an extended multi-centre break may be interested to know that it’s a 45-minute drive from here to Livorno for ferries to Corsica, Sardinia and other island destinations. This site is part of a farm stretching over 17 acres, so there’s plenty of space to chill out, walk among the plants and see what kind of wildlife you can spot. You’ll meet the farm’s own animals too – the dogs, cats, donkeys, rabbits and chickens that roam around the place. A hot tub, sauna and barbecue area are on hand for relaxed evenings, and there are also essential amenities including wifi, showers, toilets and a dog toilet area.

Local attractions

Your first port of call for outings and activities should be the site owners – they can help organise day trips, suggest hiking trails and spas, or sign you up for on-site activities like art classes and cooking sessions. The rural surroundings have lots of options too, including walks, mountain biking, canyoning, paragliding and climbing on via ferrata trails. Of course, if you’re only doing one outing it should be to Pisa (10 minutes’ drive) to see the tower and cathedral, wander through the piazzas and along the riverside, visit the museums and dine in some top-quality restaurants. More time on your hands? Take a guided tour of the ornate Villa di Corliano (five minutes), spend a day in lovely Lucca (20 minutes) or head to Viareggio (half an hour) to swim from its long sandy beach. Torre del Lago (25 minutes) is another good call, especially when the Puccini Festival is in full swing in summer.
