- Glamping in an ancient olive grove in the Maremma hills of Tuscany
- Follonica and the coast 35 minutes’ drive; Siena 50 minutes
- Private bathroom and outdoor kitchen; open-air shower; infinity pool
Would that all wild camping sites were like Wild Camp Il Casettone. Far from being a basic option, this peaceful family-run property in the hills of the Maremma region of Tuscany is as close to glamping as it gets. An ancient 10-hectare olive grove half an hour’s drive from Grosseto is dotted with safari tents – all featuring a comfortable real bed, and all stylishly decorated with colourful rugs, scatter cushions and vases of freshly plucked flowers.
A raft of amenities reinforces the glamping theme. While you might have to share a fridge with the other guests, you get your own private outdoor kitchen/dining area right by your tent, with running water, a three-burner stove, and cooking and eating utensils. Not forgetting a sturdy table with chairs.
A central wooden building in the middle of the olive grove houses private bathrooms for each tent, with a sink and toilet, plus a decadent open-air hot-water shower – so you don’t have to miss out on those spectacular valley views for even a minute. There are more glorious vistas to be had from the large infinity pool, where you can watch the sunset over the hills from the comfort of your sun lounger.
Roccastrada is a five-minute drive away, should you fancy going out for a gelato or a meal (there are also grocery shops and a bakery here, so you can stock up on any essentials). Then take a stroll through the village and to the Terrazze Panoramiche del Collese observation deck, where you can see as far as the Tyrrhenian Sea on a good day.
