- Family-friendly Tuscan beach site 10 minutes’ drive from Orbetello
- Giannella Beach five minutes’ walk; the Maremma half an hour’s drive
- Swimming pools and a private beach; bar/restaurant and entertainment
Sitting on the spindly isthmus of land connecting Monte Argentario to the Maremma region in mainland Tuscany, Holiday Lodge Orbetello is a carefully landscaped site with lots of leafy corners where family-friendly lodges are tucked under trees for shade.
Sleeping up to four guests, the units have open-plan living space, two bedrooms with double and single beds, ensuite shower rooms and simple kitchens with all the essentials such as fridges, kettles and microwaves. Handy extras include TV and air conditionings to keep summertime temperatures comfortable.
This is a spot where families will find lots to keep them busy; there’s a mini-waterpark with everything from a spa pool to a lap pool and splash fountain for the kids to cool off in. The golden sands of Giannella Beach are barely five minutes’ walk away, where you can all soak up the sun on loungers shaded by parasols or have a paddle in the calm Tyrrhenian Sea.
A well-stocked bar/shop and spacious restaurant with a shaded terrace take care of any catering concerns, and there’s a day-long roster of organised entertainment for everyone – such as exercise classes during the day and live shows at night.

Local attractions
Where to start? Probably with a few days in the sun on Giannella Beach. If you then want a change of scenery, there are a couple of lidos and seafood restaurants backing Tramonto Beach (five minutes’ drive). Kids can paddle safely behind the stone barriers on pebbled Blonde Beach (10 minutes), and there’s a scenic inlet at Cala Piccola (20 minutes) with calm waves for novice swimmers.
Wildlife lovers, perhaps you’d like to explore Maremma Regional Park (half an hour), where you can hike the Talamone-Cannelle footpath through Mediterranean maquis scrub, take long cycle rides along the waterways and keep an eye out for roe deer, wild boar and birds of prey. For glimpses of pink flamingoes and grey herons stalking the wetlands, head for Oasi WWF Laguna di Orbetello (10 minutes).
Learn a little about ancient Tuscan culture with a tour of the gently crumbling relics at the Roman Town of Cosa (20 minutes). Alternatively, visit storied Orbetello (10 minutes) for a look around its Tuscan-Gothic cathedral adorned with several centuries-worth of frescoes, a browse through its craft shops and stalls and tasty plates of pasta in cosy trattorias.
