  • Well-equipped dog-friendly site in the village of Caprese Michelangelo
  • La Verna Franciscan Sanctuary half an hour’s drive; Arezzo 50 minutes
  • Pool and playground; shop with local products; bookable activities
The mountains, valleys and oak woods of the Tuscan Apennines are yours to explore from Campeggio Michelangelo, a peaceful dog-friendly site on the outskirts of the village of Caprese Michelangelo (10 minutes on foot), where a certain Renaissance artist known for decorating the Sistine Chapel was born in 1475… In addition to the pretty spectacular scenery and the artistic connection (the castle where Michelangelo was born, on the other side of the village, now houses a museum with reproductions of some of his works), this area puts you in the middle of the northern leg of the Way of St Francis, a pilgrimage route that follows the path St Francis would take from his hometown of Assisi to the sanctuary at La Verna (half an hour’s drive away, if you don’t have the patience to retrace the holy man’s steps). The small playground, seasonal open-air pool and pétanque court should keep most children entertained; if that is not quite enough, the bird-of-prey experience with a master falconer (bookable for an additional fee) ought to do it. Other bookable pursuits include seasonal activities like chestnut gathering, truffle hunting and visits to a local beekeeper (complete with tasting). Speaking of bees, you can purchase jars of local honey at the on-site shop, which also sells eggs, truffle-based products and disposable barbecues. For sausages, ribs and other grillable items, head to the butcher’s shop in the village, which also has a handful of restaurants where you can sample the local cuisine. In addition to a washing-up area, the site comes with toilet blocks with showers (including disabled facilities), a launderette and a drying room.

Liked: It was perfect, nice, shady pitch, good facilities. Due to the time of year it was quiet but I bet it's popular in the summer.

Disliked: It would have been nice to have been able to arrive a little earlier.

Local attractions

Just because you’re in the mountains doesn’t mean you can’t bust out your windsurfing board. The Lago di Montedoglio reservoir (25 minutes) is a popular spot for watersports. From there, head to the Area Naturale Protetta Golena del Tevere, a watery reserve where you might see kingfishers, cormorants and other birds. Another major painter hailing from this area is Piero della Francesca, who was born in Sansepolcro (half an hour) in the early 1400s. The town’s Civic Museum houses some of this Renaissance artist’s works, including a moving ‘Resurrection’ and the large ‘Polyptych of the Misericordia’ altarpiece. The Basilica di San Francesco in Arezzo (50 minutes) is known for a cycle of frescoes by Piero della Francesca. There are more frescoes at Casa Vasari, painted by the Arezzo-born artist Giorgio Vasari in the mid-16th century. After this artistic tour, relax at a terrace café on Piazza Grande as you admire the surrounding medieval buildings, with stone towers and wooden balconies.
