- Tree-shaded site a 15-minute walk from a beach on the Ionian Coast
- Crotone half an hour’s drive; Douglasia Park one hour and five minutes
- Panoramic sea views; a five-minute drive from a village with dining
With two spectacular coastlines on two different seas (the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian), the southern Italian region of Calabria (the foot of the boot, if you like) ought to appeal to beach bums and watersports enthusiasts alike. Throw in stunning archaeological remains and sublime gastronomic traditions, and you’ll kick yourself for waiting this long to visit.
And when you do, you might want to stay at Sun Bay Le Castella. Why, you might ask? Well, first and foremost, its location, on a tree-dotted shallow plateau overlooking a calm bay of the Ionian Sea. The sun rises over the water here, and it’s such a spectacular event that you probably won’t even mind getting up at nasty o’ clock to witness it.
The site feels peaceful and remote, but you’re only a 15-minute walk (or a five-minute drive) from the nearest village, Le Castella, where you can stock up on goodies for the barbecue (provided) or sample Calabrian dishes in traditional restaurants – think freshly caught fish and seafood, and pizzas topped with ’nduja, the local spicy sausage.
If you want to get to the seaside (rather than just admire it from your comfortably shaded pitch), you have several options: from Corallo Beach in the village, to the wider Lido Comunale (10 minutes’ drive).
Back at the site after a long day of swimming or canoeing in these clear waters (so clear that an agency at the harbour runs glass-bottomed boat trips), you can prepare for the evening ahead with a nice hot-water shower. Other facilities include a toilet block (equipped for disabled guests) and a drying room.

Local attractions
The archaeological site of Capo Colonna (half an hour’s drive) has traces of ancient buildings and one single extant column thought to have belonged to a Greek temple back in the 5th century BC. There’s more to see in the Museo Archeologico di Capo Colonna, including locally excavated statuary.
In addition to its long harbour, a popular spot for strolls, Crotone (half an hour) has a pretty town centre with pastel-coloured houses, marble steps and palm trees. The National Archaeological Museum of Crotone exhibits splendid Greek black-and-red pottery, sculptures, jewellery and a remarkably ornate golden crown.
Parco divertimenti Douglasia Park (one hour and five minutes) is named after the Douglas firs that dot its landscape and provide welcome shade in the summer. Activities here include archery, horseback rides, a treetop course and paintball; there are also play areas and picnic tables.
