  • Welcoming site for long and short stays
  • Five kilometres from Sottrum and an easy 30-kilometre drive to Bremen
  • Fishing, pool and sauna
Sand – inland? Stride off into dunes with ease from Rotenberg site Camping-Paradies Grüner Jäger, on the edge of the Voßberge nature reserve in a region overlooked by the only hiking dunes in northern Germany. There's marsh and forest to meander around from here too, as Grüner Jäger opens onto the Wümmeniederung or Wümme Depression, the woodland, bog and geest landscape region of Lower Saxony. Fishing for around a dozen slippery species is in the waters of the Wümme river from the site; if you'd prefer to city sightsee, district capital Rotenburg is 25 minutes' drive to the east and Bremen the same distance to the west; local town Sottrum is five kilometres away. Take a look at the site pics to be chuffed even before arrival at the well-appointed and roomy amenities, including showers and toilets, a parent and baby washroom and a washing-up area. The spacious pitches are on grass; couples, solo travellers, families, groups and pets are all welcome. For your more leisurely pursuits, there's a big outdoor pool with sauna (handy after tramping around the local dunes or marshes), as well as a roomy playground (handy for tuckering out the kids).

Local attractions

Day trips options nearby include Bremen and its galleries and museums; the town of Worpswede (40 minutes' drive), the archipelago of Heligoland and other boat trips around the North and Baltic seas: ask the team for its top tips. Family days are plentiful around here too: try Magic Park Verden (30 minutes); the fab Weltvogelpark Walsrode bird park in the middle of Lüneburg Heath (45 minutes), Heide Park Resort in Soltau (55 minutes) and the animal parks in Lauenbrück (LandPark Lauenbrueck, 35 minutes' drive), Hodenhagen (Serengeti Park, 50 minutes) and Hamburg (Tierpark Hagenbeck, an hour and five minutes away). Lüneburg Heath and its nature spotting is another tiptop destination in the area: look out for bison, moose and brown bear around its 20 reserves, alongside somewhat tamer options such as woodpeckers and black grouse. Fish for over a dozen species including eel, grayling, perch, carp and brown or rainbow trout in the waters of the Wümme: pay for a day or weekly ticket at the Ottersberger fishing club.

What customers say

Great spot with lovely modern facilities (washrooms, pool). Quiet and spacious. Some booking/payment system hiccups and few on-site services.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked The location - the pool and the new shower block

Disliked The fact that the no contact entry system lost our booking.
Then once we contacted reception (by phone there isn’t anyone there) they would only give me a token to get through the barrier and onto the pitch.
I then had to ring again and negotiate to be given the tokens that I could load with credit so that the electric worked at our pitch and we could get into the shower block and have access to running hot and cold water.
We had over 4€ credit on the tokens when we left but the self service check in and token top up/refund wasn’t working so we couldn’t claim the credit back.
The shower block became very wet with children and adults coming in from the pool

Power optional grass campsite

Liked The location, size of pitch and facilities.

Disliked The fact that it’s all automated- check in access to electric and showers etc. however it all worked, and there is an option to move through the screens in English so simple enough. But - when my shower drain was blocked and flooded my shower and I couldn’t get any water to drain (after only running the shower for a couple of minutes) there was absolutely no one to report it to. Went to reception twice and no body there at all.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Location

Disliked A full automated check in, which wasn’t easy TBH, no staff or manager to be seen, uneven pitches and very outdated looking site

The toilets and showers were clean, but somehow you had to use the automated system and a chip to get hot water from the showers, couldn’t get it to work so cold shower it was

Liked Everything. The location is good. The pitches are very spacious, the sanitary building is clean and the water is hot. Swimming pool is open all day, and is nice and clean. We had a really good stay and enjoyed every minute of it. I would recommend it for all kinds of stay. The WiFi is free and really good.
