A quiet rural spot to lay your head. Excellent Bavarian dishes available right next to your pitch. Liking the sound of that? You should be thinking seriously about booking a stay at Zur Burgschanke Friedrichsthal, a small family-run site in the middle of Ansbach countryside with grass touring pitches, a restaurant and beer garden. The camping meadow is predominantly flat, with no set pitches so you can settle down in your favourite spot. Views extend over lovely countryside to the edge of the forest – gateway to scenic Bavarian hiking and cycling jaunts, and as there’s no light pollution, at night the skies dance with a starry display. There’s no need to fret about catering matters at all when you stay here, as there’s a breakfast service available – just be sure to put your order in the night before. The traditional tavern serves hearty local dishes and on warmer days there’s no better place to be than the romantic beer garden – both are open all day. Dogs are very welcome on your Bavarian getaway; the owners just ask that they stay on a leash around the site, and that the field be kept clean of waste for other campers.

Disliked: As a solo female traveller I wouldn’t recommend, I’m sure it is fine in a group but I didn’t feel completely safe alone. Toilet facilities are not good.

Liked: The host was excellent, very friendly and spoke English (wish we spoke more German!) She recommended local Bavarian dishes from the restaurant. Felt like we had a really authentic Bavarian experience. Facilities were basic but clean.

Liked: Very relaxed and friendly site with a lovely family running the site and tavern. We were taking travelling a long distance and it was no problem for us to have food when we arrived. It was delicious, home cooked, local food. If you love being in nature and being able to see the stars it's perfect. Also a real taste of Bavarian life. The bathrooms are basic and clean. The breakfast was a real treat, the highlight was the homemade jam. A thoroughly enjoyable stay.

Disliked: Everything else. This is €15 for a reason. The pitches were ridden with flying ants and it took us almost an hour to disinfect our van. The toilet block wants knocking down. It’s in a lovely location it it’s very run down. My wife nearly went through a decking area as it was so rotten.

From the manager: Hallo schade dass es ihnen nicht gefallen hat bei uns ja unser Stellplatz kostet 15€ pro Nacht für 10 oder 15 Personen 1, 2 Fahrzeuge ja wir leben von unserer Gastronomie und nicht vom Stehplatz deshalb nur 15€ und wir wissen dass unsere WC- Container saniert werden müssen. Wir sind froh dass wir noch existieren nach Corona in der abgelegenen Gegend mitten im nirgendwo in der wunderschönen Natur. Ja wir sind froh dass wir noch existieren, und es ist ziemlich schwierig für uns dass Gesamte Objekt in Schuss zu halten zu zweit nach Corona wir sind ein zwei Mann Unternehmen und leben hier sehr glücklich und teilen die Umgebung gerne mit unseren Touristen. Aber es ist uns nicht möglich in einem Dorf wo 26 Menschen leben und die Umgebung von der Natur geprägt ist etwas gegen die Natur zu unternehmen, und nein daß ist auch nicht unser Wunsch denn wir lieben diese Natur. Hier gibt es noch Tiere wir sehen jeden Tag Füchse, Marder, Rehe und Hasen wir haben noch viele Vogelarten und Insekten und ja an dem Tag sind Wohl die Ameisen Königinen geschlüpft und sie waren auch im Haus aber dass ist Natur. Dass sollten sie wissen wenn sie bei uns buchen. Liebe Grüße

From the manager: Hallo, schade dass es ihnen nicht gefallen hat, bei uns ich hatte den Eindruck sie hatten Spaß und haben sich amüsiert. Zu dem Vorfall mit meinem Mann dem Vermieter möchte ich sagen nein er war nicht betrunken er trinkt seid 8 Jahren kein Alkohol mehr weil er krank ist. Auch war er nicht zutraulich sondern hat lediglich versucht sie zu beruhigen weil sie sehr aufgebracht waren und sich wohl sehr aufgeregt haben. In unserer Anzeige steht dass wir kein Englisch können und er hat es mit den Worten die ihm eingefallen sind versucht zu erklären. Ich habe auch gemerkt dass sie ziemlich gestresst waren. Ich wünsche ihnen trotzdem alles gute für ihre Zukunft.

Local attractions

Walkers can set out on the photogenic, long-distance Altmühltal Panorama Trail (20 minutes’s drive) along the Altmühl River through gorgeous countryside scattered with bizarre rock formations. Wait for a clear day to hike up the slopes of Hesselberg (15 minutes); from the top you can sometimes spot the Alps, over 90 miles away. Visit the cute town of Dinkelsbühl (20 minutes) to check out the coloured, gabled houses in its historic centre, or travel back in time to see how ancient Roman soldiers lived at LIMESEUM and Römerpark Ruffenhofen (also 20 minutes), which has a scale model of a wooden fort and artefacts found locally in an interactive museum. Kids with you? Introduce them to the history of Bavaria at Altmühltal Valley Archaeological Park (20 minutes), an open-air museum bringing the region’s history to life using reconstructed Celtic settlements and wooden farmhouses. When they’ve had enough of culture, make for the sandy lakeside beach at Seezentrum Wald Altmühlsee (also 20 minutes), or take them to Wille Kinderzoo (15 minutes) to feed the elephants and cuddle the miniature ponies.
