  • Stunningly scenic site high in the French alps
  • Écrins National Park hikes, climbs and via ferrata within an hour
  • Sauna, hot tub, sun terrace, steakhouse and ice cream bar
If you’re in search of a high old time, make your way to Camping Le Domaine du Trappeur, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the village of Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves in the Savoie department of Rhône-Alpes high in the French Alps. For those who like to keep busy, there’s 18-hole miniature golf for a putt around, a trampoline for bouncing the energy away and table tennis, billiards and pinball to have a ball with. Prefer a more sedate approach? Also on site are a giant chess set for high-stakes games and a library for the bookworms. No need to feel trapped in Le Domaine though, as there’s plenty hereabouts to lure guests away from games. The site is within 45 minutes of the slopes at Le Corbier and, while they won’t be covered in powder during summery stays, they make for worthy tracks and trails for hiking and biking during the warmer weather. Sound tiring? Soothe aching muscles after heady climbs with an afternoon spent in the site’s sauna, hot tub and solarium, then satisfy hungry vibes in Le Trappeur steakhouse and pass the evening soaking in the stunning views across the Arves valley.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Amazing views from all the pitches! We arrived in the rain but the restaurant served as a welcomed refuge. We ate dinner in the resturant which was fabulous and the owners / staff extremely friendly. After a long drive and staying at serveral campsites in previous days we both felt this one had been our best one yet!

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: A spectacular site, right up in the French Alps. So lovely to wake up in the mountains! The pitches were great and were level and easy to get into. Some nice little facilities for children too (trampoline etc). We would definitely return to the site in future.

Disliked: The only downside was that there didn’t seem to be any water tap for motorhomes to fill up (the only one was with the chemical toilet emptying, which we didn’t want to use for our fresh water if it’s been used for rinsing out toilets!).

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked: Location was breath-taking - spectacular views of surrounding mountains. Beautiful walk into the village, and if you didn't fancy the steep uphill walk back, there was a (free) little land train which went right up to the campsite. Good, clean facilities. Nice restaurant / bar with great views. Large level pitches.

Disliked: Nothing!

Hutte Marmotte shepherd's hut (two person)

Liked: The charisma of the site proprietors and their helpfulness.liked our little shepherd hut with its little terrace and chairs and electric plugs inside. The restaurant was very helpful with their aid about our dietary needs.

Disliked: lack of bright lights around the staircases and throughout the site when it was dark. I had to be very very careful not to trip as I have brittle bones. i know there were solar lights but not enough of them in strategic places.

Local attractions

Were walking boots the first thing into the suitcase? There are plenty of options around here for hikers and walkers of all kinds… start with a three-hour hike from Col de la Croix de Fer (10 minutes’ drive from base) to Etendard glacier; explore the trails, climbs and via ferrata an hour away in Écrins National Park, or venture to Vizille to pick up the 325-kilometre Route Napoléon from Grenoble to Cannes. It’s easy to stick to outdoor excursions as long as you’re willing to spend a little time in the car – there’s paragliding 45 minutes away, treetop adventuring in Écrins National Park (at Vénosc), and swimming and watersports an hour and a half away at the Laffrey lakes. Have a different kind of adventure (through time) with explores of the cloisters and crypt of Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste 40 minutes away in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne, and stick to the past with tours at the spectacular Château de Touvet, the museum of the French Revolution in Château de Vizille and the notorious fortress of Château de Miolans (nicknamed ‘the Bastille of the Alps’), all within an hour and a half. Finding some local delicacies to nab as souvenirs won’t be too difficult either: wander into Saint-Sorlin-d’Arves for a glimpse behind closed doors – and some essential sampling of wares – at the Fromagerie Coopérative Laitière de las Vallées des Arves.
