  • Family-friendly Rhône-Alpes campsite in the Trièves village of Mens
  • Pont de Ponsonnas 15 minutes’ drive; Passerelle Himalayenne 35 minutes
  • Swimming pools and sports facilities; communal barbecues and pizzeria
With an unforgettable setting in the spectacular Rhône-Alpes, family-friendly Camping du Pré Rolland sits in Mens, the main village of the Trièves region, and is backed by the dramatic peaks of the Vercors and Dévoluy massifs. It’s also within 40 minutes’ drive of the gorgeous mountain lakes and watersports hubs of Monteynard-Avignonet and Sautet. While you’ll probably be keen to get out walking or cycling (you can hire e-bikes on site) in the mountains, don’t forget there’s masses of active stuff to do on site, namely supervised swimming in the three pools, playing volleyball, pétanque or table tennis. Younger guests can let off steam at the playground (you must supervise your offspring please), and there’s a TV room for quiet moments when everybody’s exhausted after running around all day. When it comes to meals, there are shared barbecue facilities, a bar and a restaurant serving up homemade pizzas and other family fare – takeaways are available too – on a shady terrace overlooking the pools. And as the campsite is right in the village, all the shops you’re likely to need are within five minutes’ stroll. Anything else you need to know, reception is open daily.

Local attractions

The adrenaline junkies among you can get your fix with a bungee jump off Trièves’ Pont de Ponsonnas (15 minutes’ drive), or by soaring above jagged mountain peaks on a tandem flight organised by Paraglider School Aérosat (five minutes’ walk). Younger adventurers will have fun racing around the treetops on high ropes at Parcours Aventure Trièves (half an hour’s drive). Even if you’d rather keep both feet firmly on the ground, you can still test your head for heights by walking across the River Drac on the Passerelle Himalayenne suspended footbridge (35 minutes). There’s hiking for all abilities on the Sentier d’Asnières-en-Dévoluy (45 minutes), with its backdrop of craggy foothills, and some rather more testing routes and serious rock climbing up to the flat top of Mont Aiguille (40 minutes). The lakes of Monteynard-Avignonet and Saulet (both 40 minutes) are popular watersports hubs, with facilities for windsurfing, kitesurfing and dinghy sailing. If you can muster any strength after all that exertion, make a beeline for Terre Vivante Ecological Centre (10 minutes) and amble around wildlife ponds and meadows full of wildflowers.
